El Salvador goes with ATSC DTV
 

In the latest "TV Technology" May 27/09, page 6, it says that El Salvador (one of those little Central America countries between Mexico and South America) chose to use the ATSC DTV standard. Along with Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Honduras. :banana: As they can use the same Chinese made DTV sets and set top converter boxes, to avoid expensive custom designs.

That's pretty wild. From what I know about countries like Honduras the people who live in those countries are even lucky to have a TV.

What's wrong with custom designs? Hmm...

I didn't think the Third World was even considering digital TV.

Central America; Panama, Belize, Ecuador, and Costa Rica in particular, are loading up with Americans fleeing the US economy. I have several friends who moved there to try to preserve what little assets they still have. So it doesn't surprise me that some of those (formerly) impoverished countries are adopting USA-compatible things.

Does anyone know WHY the US chose not to go for DVB ?

I believe it has something to do with 8VSB modulation providing better fringe performance, and ATSC's ability to operate within the same 6MHz bandwidth as a standard NTSC signal
