Just finished watching Burns & Allen on my similar set. If I had more volume I would call it perfect. I love it!!

I have the mahagony version and it is a good preformer. Nice sharp picture. Hopefully it will have a good crt.

Well here it is, actualy better in person, Just a little cleaning on cabinet and a polish should make it look great. The chassis is a bit dusty but it looks as if this set was cared for. I decided to do a soft start with variac.. yes, we have audio, yes we have voices, :yes:yes we have an adjustable whine!!!!:D but there is no raster!!! :tears: I took the brightener off and tried again still nothing. the crt filiment glows a very unhealthy almost white, i will have to test the crt and hope for the best.. and yes it uses the dreaded 16gp4.... I can only hope the crt is still useable, I will keep you posted. By the way, the cabinet is not Blonde per say but is a natural maple.

edison64 05-20-2009 04:22 PM

sorry for the bogus date stamp on pix

edison64 05-21-2009 09:53 PM

Bad news guys, the crt is shot, tested on bk 400 and found open cathode:tears:
sooo does anyone know where to find a 16gp4??? what will sub?? I may have to bite the bullet and get it rebuilt.

7"estatdef 05-24-2009 04:26 PM

Sorry to hear! Don't know if the 16gp4 can be rebuilt. The metal cone crt's arn't good canidates 'cause they are hard to get a good seal between the glass and metal. You could keep your eyes open for a 16" parts set. RCA and Zenith was big on those 16gp4's back in 1950.

Was wondering if you could slide in a 10BP4 of some other common crt to get the set working ?

I looked in a subtitution guide , and unfortunatly the only direct replacement for the 16GP4 is 16GP4 A 16GP4 B ect....
Which is just differences is the glass tint and such .
I would too would think you could substitute a different tube with a bit of modification .

Could it be a bad solder joint on the cathode pin ?
