1974 rca xl-100 ctc-68
 

Here's a couple of pics of a 1974 RCA XL-100 CTC-68 I picked up Sunday. It was a one-owner set that was their daily watcher for at least 25 years. Real wooden cabinet too.

I don't think I've seen cataracts on a crt this late.

i can remember cataracts on a few xl 100 s and also the accucolor sets of the 70s.most of those had a non safety glass crt.i have a ctc 68 as a daily watcher.it was in storage from day 1 to last year when i purchased it.glad no cataracts!

I've seen a couple of the first generation RCA upright chassis sets ('71-'72) that had the green halo around the screen.

The crt is weak but I can make out a raster. The sliders are going to need work - I know these were trouble - if all else fails I may try to retrofit some rotary pots.

Can you not clean the sliders with contact cleaner? I never had that much trouble with them.

Well, two are sticky - there's still hope for them. On appears to be disconnected from the slider knob, like it broke or fell into the door. I'll have to take it apart to see what I'm really dealing with.

I'm excited about getting this set going again, as it is somewhat similar to the TransVista I grew up with. Plus, the CRT on the 4-year-old Durabrand in the den is starting to get horizontal bends on one side. So this or the Sylvania will be our main set soon.

Using regular contact cleaner will usually fix them right up! Make sure it has lube in it as well. Using contact cleaner with no lube will seize a pot.

I just recently refurbed a 75 xl100 - you can find the photos a page or 2 back.
Those slider pots are a bitch! Didn't have any success with cleaning the originals, so replaced mine with NOS parts. Might have worked better if I had put more effort into it, and was thinking about some type of lube, probably a scant amount of baby oil. IIRC lots of cleaner agents have baby/mineral oil in them, so a minute amount won't hurt.
Take that aux control unit out and look at the part #'s and manufacturer of the sliders.. Google it and I think you will find that they are still manufactured - in England if I remember correctly.

BTW, retrofitting 4 standard rotary pots of the correct value onto/through the holes on the masonite back of the set was an option I was considering if I could not locate replacement slider pots. I see no reason it would not work - once set, little adjustment is necessary.

Thanks Robert, I'll do that if I need to replace the sliders. I'll have to take some better pictures, but my cabinet is a lot like yours.
