Psych-Out from 1968 ~*~
Just when I thought I'd seen em all. Psych-Out just started showing on cables Retroplex channel. I'd never heard of this movie - Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern and Susan Strasberg give bind bending performances. The fact that Nicholson is a guitar playing pony tailed character named "Stoney" is a clue to what this movie is about. Someone is always on a "bad trip". Susan runs onto the freeway while high. It's a strong reminder of why I gave up drugs 30 years ago.
What makes it a flashback for me is that in 1969 I played Susan Strasberg's younger brother in a Movie called Sweet Hunters made in Europe. I got into the movie because my father was also in it (Sterling Hayden), and he also played my father in the movie. I was only eight years old but had a huge crush on Susan, she was a good looking lady. Her effect on me was strong, I lost my balance at the steps of her dressing trailer, fell and cut my ear badly.....Very smooth ! By many peoples standards, Psych-Out would be considered a bad movie, but sends a real message to how flaked out many young people were in 1968. |
I can't add much to that description nor the memoir :-) 'cept to say that I've always liked both Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern as actors; and the latter sometimes (and somehow) reminds me of the former!

I saw that movie on Channel 5 here back when it was Metromedia, not Fox. I honestly cannot recall if it was an afternoon flick or a late show. In any case, I loved it. I was around 14 at the time and was mesmerized by the psychedelic 60s.
I have not seen it since, but there are others in that "genre". 60s surf, biker and head movies are great snapshots from another time. Wasn't it Strawberry Alarm Clock doing the soundtrack and also appearing in the movie. Anden- great stories. Keep em coming bro! |
Psych-out is on a double feature dvd...but I can't remember the name of the other film. Great 60's dementia...

Probably "The Trip" from 1967. I love all those 60's Acid trip films, one of the ultimate Acid movies is Skidoo from 1968, it has an all star cast with names like Jackie Gleason, Groucho Marx, Carol Channing, Peter Lawford, Frankie Avalon and it's directed by Otto Preminger no less. It's ROTFL bad. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063612/ |
