Hoffman out west
Any idea of the vintage of this set?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Hoffman-Easy-Vis...mZ170302918539 Seems like it must be after '51 and before '55. John |
I'd guess 54-55. I thought by then they had gotten away from the green glass. That style picture tube started showing up in maybe 53.

It's a 1954 model, based on the ships wheel knobs. I had a prototype 1954 color Hoffman with those same knobs, and a CBS-Columbia 19" tube.

I am at present restoring one with what looks to be the same chassis. The Sams is 1954. I was kind of lucky with this one as someone had already replaced the electrolytics and had replaced many of the original caps with t orange drops.
I have just finished restoring a couple of these from 1953, the MARK V chassis. The 1953 MARK V models had a better chassis, with a 5u4 rectifier,(54 has Seleniums), an actual limiter stage in the sound system(missing on the 54 model), and 4 if stages(3 in 1954). As I am connecting the 53 model to a DTV converter box, the no. of IF stages is of no consequence. However, the limiter makes for much less buzz in the sound. |
"All parts (intact)? Hmmm. I don't think so...
I saw the pic of the chassis in this set; it seems as if at most of the tubes are missing, so the seller's item description is not 100 percent correct. Not to mention the person either was in a dreadful hurry to list this item on eBay, or else he or she cannot spell (in tack rather than intact). Please forgive me if I seem to be a nitpicker on spelling, but I am a stickler for accuracy when it comes to spelling of words in documents as well as my personal writing....been this way all my life.
