Photo from 1970. I'm the one in the photo. I picked the set up from behind a repair shop. It had sound but no pix. Can you guess the model?

IIRC, that was the "Miss America" model, from c. 1960.

Thanks for that web site. Lots of information and history in there. I wonder if they'd like my photo... Without me in it, I mean.

After I gutted the set I kept the chassis around for awhile for TV sound (third shelf down on the right. You can see the channel changer sticking all the way up to the second shelf).

That was a metal shelf, too. I guess I didn't think the HV was just all of a sudden going to come on, or anything

Too bad you can't get that one back. The "Miss America" model seems much scarcer than other Predictas. I have never seen one in the flesh.

Some years back, I met a fellow from Lexington, Ky who grew up in Sikeston. Mo. His father owned a Philco store and worked out of his hip pocket. When his father had passed away he had to go up there to "clean out and dispose of". We found 2 Predictas NIB, 2 Miss Americas NIB and a Predicta "barber pole" NIB. I still have the two Predictas (17" & 21") NIB never opened. He wanted $500 for the Miss America so I passed on that one but it was plugged in and worked "as new"! Occasionally someone asks me if mine work-I don't know how to answer that as they have never been taken out of their box.

I remember that guy, Julian. He was at Radiofest years back and he mentioned he had a NOS Philco Predicta Tandem stereo phonograph. We agreed on a price, but he wouldn't take any money, so I figured it would amount to nothing. A few weeks later, a giant, beat up cardboard box shows up on my doorstep. Inside was the phono, in perfect shape. I immediately sent him the $50 plus shipping.

That's right, I almost forgot about that and that was about 15(?) or more years ago. He also wanted $500 for the Predicta barber pole with the box but I didn't buy that one either and it worked good too. He had NOS antennas for the Predictas and some other misc stuff too. One of the Miss Americas was slightly water damaged as the roof on the storage area had partially collapsed but all was hidden all those years behind some junk and old TV's. He had forgotten about them and they just stayed there until Dave had cleaned them out. I wonder what a G4242 Predicta new in the box is worth?!!

Only ebay knows...keeping it as-is should prove to be an excellent investment on your part!

I thought that was a cool set, too, particularly with the swivel base. But the lack of HV was beyond my years at the time. Also, I was REALLY trying to find a COLOR set. But never did get color until mid '80's!

I have a Philco set that looks just like your did but it is missing the knob that goes on the right side about half way down. Did you happen to keep any of the knobs after you junked your Philco out?

Ha! I forgot it even HAD knobs down the side! But, no, in 1970 I never would have guessed anyone would EVER want any part of that set. I mean, I would have KILLED for color back then.

Although... it WOULD have been cool if someone had been around then to tell me why there was no HV. I was just too green to figure it out myself. I was MUCH more efficient at digging tubes out of dumpsters behind TV repair shops back then.
