RCA Convergence Board - PW800
 

Unfortunately, I don't have the test equipment to troubleshoot the convergence board, but know it has issues - not sure what else would cause this. Had a time getting convergence set up, and when looking at the tv screen, on the upper top quadrant, there is a bit of blue misconvergence (vertical lines), and the center line has a small amount of red showing, (vertical) and lastly, was a bear to get the blue horizontal lines by and large ok - still not perfect, but took a lot of effort. Does anyone have a convergence board, or suggestion as to what part of the board might be causing it? I suspect that it is the 3 coils that take the adjustment tool, but am not sure. Picture tube replaced last fall, and has good picture - just a bear to get fine adjustments 100%. Thoughts - leave it alone or try to get convergence board? Thanks! It is for a CTC-44A chassis RCA transvista color 25" console w/o remote.

I think many of those older convergence boards had a selenium rectifier pack. These were high failure parts and can be replaced with modern silicon diodes provided that you have a schematic showing how the original rectifier assembly is wired.

Since your chassis is solid state, it may be new enough to have individual silicon diodes on the convergence board. Although these are much more reliable than the selenium rectifiers, they should still be checked.

Sometimes, the controls themselves will get so hot that they fall apart after many years of use.

EDIT: Most of the parts on that convergence board can be checked with an el cheapo DMM from Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, etc. Just be sure it has a diode test function. You'll also want to get a soldering iron, solder, and some desoldering braid. Most of the parts will need to be removed from the circuit for an accurate test.

Thanks much for the suggestion. I've got the schematic for the set, and convergence board. I must admit, I am more "handy" with stuff like replacing parts, but soldering, etc. isn't my top skill set. Do you or does anyone else know of a place which will go through an item like a convergence board and replace what's needed? The purity is perfect, and the tube is only 6 months old - just those pesky convergence lines...was hoping to get the set finally in 100% top form. In retrospect, I think this has been coming on for a while because before the control for the blue left hand side horizontal lines didn't have much adjustment, while the coil which takes the allen wrench like tool had a lot of adjustment - like things were on the way out. Also, the RCA factory manual for the CTC-44A chassis differ from the rest in the book in that you set static convergence first like usual, then do the dynamic convergence adjustments, then you are supposed to reconverge the center of the screen with the static adjustments again, and make any minor touch-ups w/ the controls - not static, then dynamic then done - sort of weird...
