All this is wunnerful & good & gee-whiz, but I never saw much wrong w/the good ol' CRT...An' I bet that new-fangled whangdoodle prolly won't be around & working as long as my 1948 7" Admiral has been...

I do agree Sandy, Perhaps we should all send a few dozen emails to the FCC everyday that say BACKWARD COMPATIBLE, IT WORKS!

Don't EVEN get me started on that bunch of loathsome....Grrrrrrr!! (grin)

LED's look like the future-lots of possiblities there, especially in lighting. I think I might buy one of these sets, maybe about 20 years from now!

I don't understand the attraction of OLED displays. Their basic limitation is a finite life, ultimately the same problem as with CRTs and plasma displays. LCD displays do not have this problem. The one big improvement coming for LCD displays is LED backlighting, and that should bring some great displays.

No plans to buy any "new" sets...

We bought an as-new Sony HD 40" Wega (flat CRT) on eBay a couple months ago, and we've only watched one thing on it since. I have my 1972 Zenith, which I bought at the Salvation Army in 1981, and it's still in daily use (my ex has been using it for 2 years at her place up in Santa Clarita, but it's still mine). We have two Sony Profeel sets in the house, which are the mostly-watched sets. And a small Sharp LCD on the kitchen counter, which gets used only for background news, etc.

I have the same impression of smearing but I have seem some that were decent. But I'd have to think long & hard before spending that on any TV.

Image quality wise, I guess not. However, they are rather bulky and heavy.

If OLED displays can acheive a MTBF of at least 100,000 hours, I'd buy one when the price comes down.

I like the CRT also but when the 27" Sony in the bedroom quit I had to get our handyman to take the sucker down to the shop. If I can fix it, fine - if I can't it landfill time. Replaced it with a Toshiba LCD HDTV and apart from funny channel numbering the display is excellent. And I can actually pick it up!
