Zenith portable - 1978
 

B&W set, about 9 or 10" picture.

I like the simple look of it.

Made in Mexico cheapie, or a nice little portable for the era ? It works.

For sale at a local thrift for 3 bucks. It is very dusty.

Just the fact that its 30 years old and still works should tell you its no cheapie.

I'd say "Sold !" so fast it'd make their heads spin...

I've ran into a few of those and they seem to be good sets. I'd get it just because it's 30 years old and $3. It will probably just go to the dump if you leave it.

I like that style of cabinet, kinda tilted back. Must have been designed by the same guy who did the modern consoles they had. These were built in Taiwan, I think.

Right, Doug told me Zenith moved the manufacturing of the smaller black and white sets to Taiwan in the mid-1970's and these had a mix of Zenith and made in Asia parts to Zenith specs.

It's a well built set , but I think I'm gonna pass on it. I've got limited space and want to collect the older Zeniths made in Chicago.

Yes, I think Taiwan is correct.

These sets are excellent for DXing. They are very sensitive, IMO. I once connected a large antenna array to one of these and was picking up CT stations like they were broadcast from Manhattan. Wasn't even really trying...

But alas, they are not collectible since they kind of marked the beginning of the end for Zenith's being built in Chicago. Reminds me of the Matsushita takeover of Quasar.
