Haven't seen it yet ... but want to ... waiting for the DVDs to become reasonable.

HBO has some great ones.

deadwood wasn't 'pulled'. . . they ran out of story materialk. The show was only scheduled for one year possibally two then ran three seasons. . .

That said it was my favorite show. . . I've watched so many reruns I'm getting sick of it.

I'd like to see the same folks make a new 'Wagon Train' movie. . . Or series. . .

The best thing HBO has put out short of the Soprano's.

Now that I think about it, I believe I liked it better overall. Not many weak episodes.

i loved it too. and while we're on the topic, did you guys know that HBO passed on Mad Men? last season's runaway cable network hit. set on madison ave advertising world in the early 60's, stylistically it hits all the period mid century modern marks dead on, has fantastic writing, editing, acting, and set design beyond belief....just like Deadwood

Mad Men would have been perfect for HBO.

I dug Deadwood, but I kind of faded after they killed Sam Elliott.

I just started watching the first season of "The Wire" and I'm getting sucked in.

"Flight of the Conchords" works for me, but I can't tell you why.

The few episodes of 'Deadwood' I caught had a dark heaviness to them that was amazing considering it was after all TV (sorry...HBO :D)
The other series I would like to re-visit in its entirety, just to see it, is 'Carnivale.'

I enjoyed Deadwood in spite of its excesses and was fond of Carnivale. Historically haven't been into "cop" shows, but I'm giving some thought to starting in on The Wire.

Kinda was The Soprano's of the Wild West. What was cool about it was they actually did some research re: the era's speech, dress, manner, living conditions, and the whole mining premise it was based on.

Thanks for the reminder- I've been meaning to add Deadwood and Carnivale to my Netflix rotation.

i loved Carnivale. i thought it was so daring in its subject matter, and willingness to depict the dark, the strange, the enigmatic. but it came apart at the end as they strove to resolve the preacher's ultimate fate. they also left it open to his return.

The Wire is not a cop show. it is fiction that includes cops, as well as their counter-industry, the drug dealers. the politics of the city rely as heavily on the drug business as it does on the need for 'law and order'. it is a fascinating, deep, immersive study of a world that unfolds daily in every big american city, but which largely invisible to most of us except for the stuff that makes the media. one of my all time favorites.

Deadwood and Carnivale
 

I thought the "Deadwood" series would be interesting when I started watching it. It certainly was. But the degree of evil and viciousness shown by several of the characters made it unwatchable for me.

I know that it probably was accurate as to the degree of courseness and evil that existed in that time and place, but I just couldn't watch it! Additionally, I just don't care for the language. I find that when I watch something with this amount of profanity and vulgarity, it de-sensitizes me to it, and that's not good.

It was for the same reason that I never watched the "Sopranos", even though it has been "critically acclaimed".

I started watching "Carnivale" and eventually it got too dark for me as well.

I'm not a goody two-shoes or a Pollyanna, I just don't enjoy shows that are that dark, course or crude. I also find that many current movies use nudity, sex, violence and course language unnecessarily. I really do believe that these things are often in the movie to attempt to make a poor story or a poorly made movie "more interesting".

I recently watched "There will be blood". The courseness that was shown (which was pretty minimal compared to "Deadwood" ) would have been expected for the storyline, but even so was reasonably minimal, with the exception of the last scene in the movie.

I loved Deadwood, and can't wait for another series to get that excited about!

It was kind of neat seeing some of the characters resurface on "John from Cincinnati" for a while...that was another neat show, but a little too out there for most people I think (and the ratings seemed to support my hypothesis)

On another note, I think it's easy to focus on the brutality in a show like Deadwood and miss out on the underlying goodness...the lengths to which people would go to help one another out, or the depth of feeling between enemies (Swearingen and the Sheriff working together against the outsider and his thugs? Who knew?)

It's hard to imagine that less than 150 years ago there were still parts of this country without the rule of law...

I live in Southern California, so there is a lot of Spanish language programming....

For some reason, they don't translate the profanities accurately.....and in DEADWOOD, that could have dire consequences !!!
