This movie was made for the big flat screen tv's. Gorgeous scenery and top notch soundtrack to boot- Great story too ;-)

I have not seen the movie yet, but the guy who plays the aging hippy dude half of the couple that the protagonist stays with for awhile is an old friend of mine. He was coordinating support for filming some of the river scenes and got roped into an acting role. Sounds as if he just got to play himself, probably one reason why it worked...

I am looking forward to seeing it. Great book, as was Into Thin Air.

Read it, won't see it. Been to Denali, Healy, Fairbanks... I don't want to be disappointed or at the very least, my mental image of it changed.

Saw it this weekend, good casting, great soundtrack - Vedder's vocals sound just right. thought the movie matched the experience of reading the book (although as usual the book was a much richer experience) -- both tell a really different and unsettling story.

Yep.

The scenes shot at Slab City and Salvation Mountain are pretty accurate. Slab City is just a short distance from the painted mountain and that gray haired guy in the movie is the actual guy that did all of that although that area is a little messier than is depicted in the movie. It's 1,000's of gallons of latex paint.

It's just south of Niland, on the east side of the Salton Sea.

There´s a swedish TV show where two guys travels around the states and meets with different whacky/original/special/odd people and in the last episode they payed the guy at Salvation Mountain a visit.
Slab City seems like a great place to scavenge for Lp´s (unless they are all warped from the heat)
