Sony KX-1901 Profeel Trinitron - parts
 

Hello,

I have a KX-1901 Profeel Trinitron component monitor from ages past. Its been a dead set for awhile now. I was trying to figure out what to do with it.
I was using it with the component speakers, tuner (VTX-1100R) and its remote (RM-723), along with the less common MTX adapter (MLV-1100).

I do not repair monitors myself, and found someone locally who was willing to take a peek. He verified the CRT is good, but that it needed a "microprocessor board." He gave a good shot trying to locate a PCB for this set, including electronic recyclers, but its been a no go.

I have to pick up this set by the weekend (then figure out where else it can go). Unfortunately that means it might have to find a landfill or recycler... Unless someone knowns someone who has parts or a parts set, and is willing to assist me in keeping it. Otherwise I'll keep the component accessories and try to find them a good home (they still work).

I checked with kx250rider as I know he has Profeel monitors, but he doesn't have any parts available. I know its long shot, but I thought I'd try.

There is no microprocessor in a KX-1901 that I know of (at least not in the Euro model). Which board do you need? I may have some spares, but I don't know how much is interchangable between the US and Euro models.

The boards are listed as follows in the service manual:

T board: Teletext (actually RGB in)
V board: Indicator
N board: Remote control
C board: RGB out
H board: Customer controls
U board: Tone/vol/col/pic control, AF amp, 12V reg, Pic decoder buffer
B board: PAL chroma, SECAM chroma, V count down, auto pedestal
D board: reg amp, hv osc, v out, system select, pin amp, 12v reg

I agree that is it far better to repair the actual fault on the board you have, though donor boards are often the only source for otherwise unobtainable ICs.

Hopefully Charles might add his comments to this thread.He has this set...

I did PM Greg on this, and as Andy says, it's unusual to replace boards and not troubleshoot. The Euro 1901 is probably quite different... The US models are NTSC 3.58 only, so I would suspect that the Euro ones are exclusive PAL or Secam.

There have been others posting about Profeels here, so likely somebody has one with a dim tube that they'd be willing to part out.

Thanks for keeping an eye out on this. I thought the tech would be able to fix the board, but it may be that the parts on it are as tough as getting the board itself. I have to pick it up as-is this weekend (unless I found parts to make him hold it longer) and just pay the standard diagnostic fee and then figure out what else to do with it. I'll found out which board he was referring to.

I do know he was able to force the set on and verified the CRT is good. He said he was not able to adjust the volume, channels, etc...that way unless the board was ordered and replaced. Does that make sense?

Otherwise, does anyone know anybody in MD who could troubleshoot further or have interest in the set?

What part of the state are you in? I know a couple guys down here on the shore; maybe Veg-o-Matic knows someone around Baltimore?

Yes, I'm closer to the Baltimore area in Howard County.

I picked up the set (literally) on Friday. I know its not as heavy as the KX-2501(A), but its the heaviest 19" set I've ever held. For now its back at my place, dead.

If anyone either:

1. knowns anyone in the Baltimore metro area that can get this set going for me in the near future or...

2. wants to pickup this set as-is (good crt) for their own parts stash, contact me. I'd rather either of these than the scrap yard/landfill. If so, I'll deal with the working components separately (still have the small attached speakers, tuner, mpx adaptor).

The 1st one would be closest. I have not yet contacted any of them, but I noted the last one with the contact info for Dave Wreski in NJ keeps coming up in searches relating to service.

At this point, I have to weigh the costs, since I spent $65 to verify the crt is good and that parts were an issue. If I take this set anywhere else, I'd feel silly spending another $65 (or more) to find out the same with no fix. I don't want to spend over $200 on a fix, so unless someone can work something out with me, I should try to find it a home before I remove it as-is.

btw, for audio tape I have a B77 and a Dragon.

I'll take any other opinions and thoughts on this.
