Radios with TV sound after 2009
 

Hi all!

I have to ask this question. A lady who I work with likes to listen to her soaps over the TV audio on her radio. She asked me that after NTSC broadcasts are stopped in February 2009, will she still be able to get channels 2 thru 13 audio. I told her no, I'm assuming the analogue TV sound will cease to be broadcast as well but I'm looking for a definite answer. Am I right is assuming her TV audio radio will be no good after 2009?

though I wonder if any "other' audio will be able to be heard...

If the broadcast is on a normal AM(550to1600khz)frequency or FM frequency(88-108mhz), it will still be ok. Analog radio is not changing, inspite of many rumors and salespeople that say it is. However, it the radio has a special TV band, this may not work following the conversion.

Those TV bands on radios will go the same way as the old FM band
(42-50 MHz). They may even be less useful as there will be no analog
broadcasting anymore in those bands. It remains to be seen whether
radio manufacturers will sell radios with the capability of receiving the
sound of the new digital TV transmissions...

That's a good question.

My wife also listens to soaps on a portable radio with TV bands.

I'm thinking it's gone in Feb 2009.

These are special bands on this radio and not AM or FM.

You are correct - the whole analog TV signal, video and audio, will go away. Only exceptions for a while will be some low-power stations, but since these do not carry the network soaps...

A DTV converter box could be used to feed a "TV audio" radio tuned to channel 3 or 4.

It will stop... Same bandwidth; just a different subcarrier within.

These boxes have baseband stereo audio outputs, just feed it into a stereo system, where a CD player would usually feed.

Right, but the only time my wife uses this portable radio with TV audio reception is outside in the yard or on vacation on a beach.

I guess there are bigger problems in life.

I'm sure that they will make new ones that receive ATSC sound... I bet by Christmas. Radio Shack isn't good for much, usually, but in this case they might be the first place to try.

I had our local channels 2,4,5,8,17,22,30 added onto our direct tv satalite service plan rather than using the pole thingy that don't work way out in the sticks. I called direct tv and they said I don't have to fear a thing as my local channels will still work fine through the direct tv receiver, and my vintage stereo will still work fine as it does now through the direct tv receiver. I was worried about it also :thmbsp:
