Prewar Meissner back on eBay (originally Gary M's)
 

I just noticed that the fellow who bought Gary Miller's Meissner 5" prewar set in '06 has relisted it on eBay, and has recapped it and got it working! I'm surprised he's reselling it, and he says the reserve is "5 figures".

So for anyone who might be interested, I can vouch for the TV as being real; not one of those eBay non-existent item scams.

On second thought, it would probably look 33.3% better just if the aspect ratio was correct; he's stretching it to fit the face of the tube.

Just my opinion but I would have restuffed the caps on something that rare.

I agree. These modern caps don't fit in such an old device. Steve McVoy provided much information how to restuff old caps for prewar sets. I hope the seller has kept the old caps and resistors for later restuffing.

WOW.. times sure have changed. Most people today, even are horrified of taking one out of the box and setting it on the TV stand theirselves, much less hooking up the DVD or VCR and actually setting the time..

Very impressive set.. yes, a shame they caps weren't restuffed instead of replaced.

Hey to all, just wanted to comment on restuffing old caps, at this time , i dont bother. but, i save the old parts and put then in a ziplok bag. who knows, in years to come that set may become extremely rare, just like the Meissner, or the trk series. and bingo!!! the factory parts can be restuffed. now hows that, quite the nifty idea.

is the screen quality because it wasnt for the 525 line standard?

On even further thought I think it's just a very soft photograph, which is too bad. I've gotten better, more detailed shots of a 2" CRT than is apparent from this one's 5" CRT.

Actually, no blame on the present owner for non-original recapping. It had been partially recapped with orange drops some time in the 80s. I had possession of it briefly when in belonged to Alan Kleiman, and I remember seeing a lot of Orange Drops in there at that time. It had never been installed in the cabinet at that time, but Alan and I installed it with a 5BP4 supplied by another collector. I don't think Gary ever did anything to it while he owned it (since appx 1991).

I haven't talked with the present owner, but I assume that he "finished" the recap and got it working.

It is at the Early Television Museum. I contacted the buyer and arranged to get it (for much more than $5, unfortunately).
