Found another Maggie combo.. Bad flyback
 

Found another one.. This one is really nice 8/66 date code and a U2002bb chassis identical to my u9109bb I have, flyback is burned up. This model is a remote unit I believe, It hads buttons for power and volume and has some odd module bolted to the floorboard under the stereo unit. Anyway Does anyone have a flyback for this set and does anyone know why the old one cooked?

for some reason i am told , magnavoxs tend to cook flybacks . I came across two that had cooked flybacks . My parents bought a new mag in 67 and in the mid 70s i remember the flyback cooked . I have a spare mag chassis , i will check if its the one you have . It came out of a combo.

i had three of those sitting in my living room back in the early 80s with cooked flybacks. this probably led to my wife leaving me and our divorce. for some reason,those units were hard on flybacks. the replacements i used to get seemed to be bigger and heavier. never had a problem. my wife got bigger and
heavier too. always had problems,even with her replacement!

I used to see bad FBTs in those all the time, but I would condemn the set when that was the problem. It's a PITA to replace the FBT in those sets. Being that it was common to have bad ones, I would think that there should be plenty of aftermarket ones floating around. I maintain a roundie Magnavox combo for a local collector (non-tech), and his, miraculously, has the original FBT. Just has had 9,278 other annoying and hard-to-troubleshoot problems.

well i found that some of those mag flybacks are hard to find . Being they were a common problem , most of the old stock has been dried up . I had a combo a few years back whick i needed a 361197-1 and i couldnt find it anywhere and wound up disguarding the set . Anytime i see mag chassis or flys i usually grab them becuase i am fond of their cabinets and try to keep spare parts . However the house is becoming overloaded .

Shoot.. Well cool, hopefully I can find one.. This set is sweet!

We need to find someone to make replacement flybacks. I wonder if one of those generic flyback companies could be persuaded to make some commonly needed ones.

It would be nice; but, I don't see it happening. I don't think there would be enough demand for them to show interest. In fact, I look for the flybacks for newer sets to be discontinued as time goes on due to the declining popularity of CRT sets.

One other nice thing would be for someone to start making sweep tubes again. I can come near seeing that happen because of Ham radio operators.

I wonder if the Chinese would make the flybacks, I know that they are eager to make anything... I get popups on my computer about china production this and that.. We should send specs and see what the costs would be... But I hope the reliability would be better than the food they have been sending over here........ I hate to outsource something but I dont see us making these cheap.

They will make anything IF you want to by a million of them. There just wouldn't be enough of a market to make any money. What might be a better alternative is if someone could do the engineering to write instructions for using flybacks from other seto in the more rare sets. In other words there really arent that many flyback designs so how about a way to modify an RCA fly to work in a Magnavox set. Other option might be rewinding the flyback. I have seen some not to pretty attempts at this though, but maybe with the tools it would be possible. Like CRT rebuilding.

Wll I tested that 25gp22 CRt in this set, blue came back, green is fair and red is weak, it took a couple of minutes for any of the guns to register anything. Running the heater voltage at 8 volts for a few minuted brings red up. But it drops back down after a few back at 6.3v. Im going to leave it cooking at 8v overnight... Good idea?

I don't think cooking it will hurt anything. If that does not work, you could try rejuvenating it provided your checker is not one of those "atomic blast" models from the '60's or '70's.

I noticed the "green halo" on the tube. I wonder if it's an original Magnavox or a newer one (like a Zenith).

It looks like it arced from the plate cap to the core. Have you investigated the damage more closely? I've heard that when RCAs do that they can sometimes be saved by removing the rubber tire and insulating it with HV silicone. If the arcing and burning was confined to the rubber, it may be fixable.
