Old Sony Trinitron
 

I found this in the back room of an antiques store... I wasn't an antique, just something the owner used to (used to as in the past tense) watch. He wants $50 for it...

I tried it, and it does work. CRT seems good. Anybody want me to go back? Sorry for the bad pictures.

Veddy, veddy early Trinitron...Would like to have it, but $50 only works if it was pick-up. Shipping would be prohibitive, & I ain't had much luck w/UPS or USPS lately...Too bad, looks like good, clean example...

That looks like the fisrt Trinitron for the US. $50 seems really high though. It's only worth it for someone who really wants that particular model.

Well you gotta remember that this guy is used to getting $1500 for a "vintage" stuffed antelope head or 18th century baby crib, lol. :D

I don't think I'd buy it. It doesn't appear to have UHF and the back is way too blurry.

That's a KV-1200U. It's early, but not the first. Same time as that one (the cheap model,) there was a 1210U which was the same TV in a wood case, and the 1220 which was the same TV but in a wood case and twin speakers. It does have a 3A3 HV rect tube though. Not worth anything, sadly. My advice: Dont buy it. If it were free, maybe save it.

The first Sony color set was the KV-7010UA, which came out about 2 years earlier.

I'd pay for the TV, the packing, boxing, and your troubles...plus I can send a FedEx Ground tag. Once the package is packed and you put the tag on, you can just drop it off at any FedEx location, or any Kinko's store...they'll take it and won't charge you at all, for shipping.

Liked them, sold them. Looks like a KV-1212U. Does it have "Sky Blue" fine tuning?

P.S. There is one tube in it as well as the CRT. It is a HV tube in a metal box at the back of the chassis. Sony said they were all solid state, but the HV couldn't be reliably handled by SS components of the day.

That looks similar to my first Trinitron set that was stolen from me by a repair shop that went under when I was a kid (at the time I didn't have the skills to work on it myself). I'm not sure of the model number, but it was probably a version fo the KV-1310E. It was unusual because it had an AV input (from the factory, not an add on kit). At the time AV inputs were uncommon even on current sets and unheard of on such an old set.

I wish I still had that set now. Maybe now I'd be able to fix the weird vertical foldover problem. The repair shop kept putting it off and saying they needed more time, part of me wonders if they did actually fix it and sold it off because it was so rare (at least to me).

Nope, the 1212 had a wood case, plus the two tuning (UHF and VHF) knobs were at the top of the front panel.

Yup! Although I can't see if it is a wooden case or what the dial above the VHF tuner is. I guess the VHF goes to "U" and the above dial takes over.

If I remember right, when I fixed an early 12" Sony color TV, I hed to buy real replacement transistors from Sony to get it to work right. I tried two sets of subs as listed in the Photofact manual or other substitution book, and they either failed or had a fold problem.

Mine is sitting dead, power supply shot. Somebody once offered to send me parts from one in his garage, never made the connection. :sigh:

That's true with some of them, particularly the SG-613 SCR, which was used as the horizontal output all through the 70s, and also as the regulator chopper in a few models (KV-1722, and ilk). That was a $60 part last time I checked, and I don't think you can even get them from Sony anymore. None of the ECG or other aftermarket ones worked. Same goes for the 2SC4834MN, which is the power supply regulator (pair) in the early 90s Sonys. The aftermarket ones fail right away. But for most of the other transistors in the early Sonys, fakes are fine.

SG-613's (Sony part number 8-761-310-00)are still available from Sony. Got several a year ago for 14 bucks each. Even the person I spoke with on the phone was surprised they still had them. I grabbed all I could afford.
