1970 RCA color TV commercial
 

I saw this 1970 RCA color TV commerical on youtube. The person who posted the commercial says its from '68, but the TV on the left is a 12A10C15 chassis zenith portable (which is a 1970 model). What exactly is the TV on the right? Never seen anything like it!

I had not idea, so I asked the old man - he thinks it's either a National/Panasonic or a JVC/Nivico set, but he too isn't sure.

Ok, found out what that set on the right is. Its a 1969 Admiral. I found an ad for one while surfing ebay and this commercial flashed in my mind. Its a perfect match.

wow! I'll take one of those admirals. I've never seen a portable with that kind of design before.

You could have gotten a few of those Admirals from my trash cans in the 80s :smoke:


They were hard to keep working, and had REALLY WEIRD tubes. Try to find an 11AF9 or a 16AQ8, for example...

Yes, admiral did use some oddball tubes. Like those goofy 10 pin minatures like the 6X9 and the 6AF9. You think you have a 9 pin minature but then realize it needs to fit into that special socket that you thought you'd never use on your tube tester......

Would have been nice if somebody had straightened the yoke on that RCA. Anybody else notice the tilt?

LOL! I'm dealing with these now, Admiral is the only set I've found these in. I wonder if they knew something the other companies didn't? And how about that dual 6JM6 horizontal output?! Crazy but really cool tvs in my opinion. I like to find things that are out-of-the-ordinary.:thmbsp:

our first set an admiral roundie saw a lot of use. it never had the dual horizontal output tubes to go bad it had only one tube changed under warranty. we traded it in at about 9 years of use still playing. we moved up to a 25" rca xl100. steve

Zenith used those 10-pin miniature tubes too. I have an 11AF9 out of a ca.1970 16" B&W set I scrapped a few years ago when its vert. output tranny went. And, no, I don't have a socket for it on my tester.

I wonder if it's one of those European types that started showing up in the late 60's. There were a bunch of tubes that had both U.S. and European
numbers on them, like the 4EJ7 IF tubes.
