The original Frankenstein
 

I got the VHS of this when all the scarlet theatre classics were released something like ten years ago. I loved all the Frankenstein flicks as a kid, but hadn't seen it since I was a kid.
I couldn't watch it then as my kid screamed at the thought of a horror film in the house.
Frankly, I couldn't believe a child of mine wouldn't love horror films.
Oh the shame....
(I must point out she's sitting next to me reading this)
Well, she sat through Shaun of the Dead a few weeks ago, so I fired it up tonight.
She left about half way through.

Kids.

I had fun, it's still a classic. Next up, young Frankenstein.

i love all the old classic horror flicks, i picked up a box DVD set a few years back, Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, i watch them every now and then, wife can't quite get into them, but that's OK. I like the giant insect movies too (Tarantula, Praying Mantis), maybe it's the whole black and white thing that does it for me?

i haven't seen too many newer horror flicks, but the ones i have seem to rely more on shock than anything else (Hostel, Saw), not scary at all.:thumbsdn:

Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff, doesn't get any better :thmbsp:

Boris Karloff in The Mummy still gives me the creeps just thinking about it. It's those dark-socketed eyes :yikes:

I remember way back in the fifties and sixties the sold short 8mm clips of the classic monsters like Frankenstein, Wolfman and the Mummy. I owned a few. No sound of course, but subtitles. They where only a few minutes long. We have come a long way huh?

If you're talking about the 1931 US flick, starring Boris Karloff, I think I know part of "why": kids today can't stand black and white movies!

I couldn't believe it then but, my own two kids always lost interest really quickly unless the show or movie was in colour.

Nobody notice that with their children?

I don't have any kids, but I think you're right about black and white. Plus, there's an actual story line.

That's a great film.You actually feel pity & revulsion for the poor brute.Favorite scene is when the monster's sitting in a dark area & a skylight opens overhead.He reaches upward,childlike,trying to touch the light,and then when the skylight is closed he seems to long for it to return.Amazing.

"Son of Frankenstein" is pretty good too. They do a lot of strange things with shadows and angles in the film to give it a quite unsettling feel.
