I really like that set, although its a little expensive. They don't mention whether its color or B&W though.

I've seen several pieces of audio gear (including one vintage Marantz integrated amp!) and speakers with transparent cabs like that. Very interesting to look at, but very low WAF. Fine for a "mancave", but good luck trying to put on in a family living room!

anyway, wouldn't the plastic yellow over the years? that'd be my concern. i would only go with seethru if it was a tube chassis :D

This might be a Urban legend, but I was told that clear cased TV sets were made for prisoners in prison, so that they could be easily inspected for contraband or hidden weapons.

Clear plactic cased TVs were indeed made for use in prisons for that very reason. There are usually a small handfull of them for sale on ebay.

That's definitely why they are clear-cased. Imagine having a vintage tv set in your jail-cell.. plenty of hidden doors and compartments to stash your goodies!!

These are color sets, without a doubt. Probably an RCA/GE chassis they used in all their 13" sets. I had a 96 or so RCA with it... TX chassis or something like it. Decent chassis, IIRC; it had remote, OSD, and headphone jack(s), and the horiz scheme was very unique for a small set (If I'm remembering the right chassis).

Yes, those TX series chassis had a weird power supply and horizontal sweep circuit. They were decent playing sets; but, could be a pain to fix sometimes. BTW, if you ever attempt to repair one of these; always discharge the main filter capacitor. It will hold it's full charge of approx 160 volts for a very long time. Don't ask how I know this.

I actually had one of those clear RCA sets a couple of years ago; but, I think mine had a newer chassis than the TX series.

I saw one if these TV's for sale at my local antique mall. It had a jail ID number on it....
Needless to say, I passed it up. It was also $150

The TV's are the prisoners property. They buy them at the prison Mercantile, and are allowed to keep them when they are released.

Whoa, really? I personally would have to get rid of that set upon release from prison-- Too many bad memories I'm sure. Cool set though
