"Into the Wild," to be released soon...should be interesting
 

I just found out this will come out in September, directed by Sean Penn. Anyone who hasn't read the book, by Jon Krakauer, may find it interesting. Great book, difficult to put down. Don't see how the movie can match it but will definitely see it.

I the early 90's I read the condensed version in an outdoor magazine.

It is a fascinating story but I gotta say though as I read it I kept thinking "What an idiot."

The magazine story evolved into the book. Yeah, it was a decent book, but I had the same thoughts throughout. I tried to read it again recently and put it down halfway through.

I'll probably check out the movie, though. I really like those survival stories. I wish they'd make a decent Shackleton flick.

Read the book years ago. All I can say is, what an odd subject for a movie. :scratch2:

It is a bit of a morbid subject for a movie. I'm kind of surprised the parents are allowing the exploitation of their son's story, by all accounts they're pretty well off already. Maybe they want a bigger retirement home.

The shame of the whole thing is that, when he tried to return from the wild and couldn't cross the river (forcing him to return to the bus) he wasn't far from a spot on the river where he could have crossed.

I am right with you on that. I will have to dig up the title but I read one sometime ago about a guy who was on a pleasure sailboat expedition as a passenger. Not a nautical guy at all. A big storm came up & he found himself in a 20 year-old leaky raft. I think he may have gotten washed over the side of the boat and because of the rough seas all they could do was toss out the raft for him. About all he had with him was whatever he'd been sleeping in, a can of peas and a nail clipper yet he survived some amazing amount of time. I exaggerate a little as I can't remember all the details but his resourcefulness was inspiring.

Second point, it is truly a shame that this dumb kid wondered up into no man's land so unprepared. It does remind me a bit though of the other idiot who liked to play with grizzly bears and eventually found himself invited to their dinner party as the main course.
