HBO's Rome
 

Yes. HBO's Rome is indeed well worth watching. I had no idea that TV could be so great.

I caught an episode on TV a few weeks ago. Then I had to 'Netflix' all the episodes that I had missed.

Very enjoyable. I like the fact that there are different directors for each episode. It makes for a unique take upon things each episode.

I miss that kid that played young Octavian, he was really good and portrayed the intelligence, self-confidence and cunning of Octavian splendidly.

You'd think they'd spend a few bucks and get those Roman aristocrats into some decent metal armor instead of the that cheesey leather junk they use. Every weekend warrior Roman reenactor hobbyist has nicer kit than the main characters on an HBO series.

i LOVE 'Rome'....set design, acting, plot development, cinematography, it has it all.

Its a great show and it has reignited my interest in Roman history. The one thing that is funny, although it works, is that it is mostly a British production filmed in Italy. Consequently, most of the main characters have British accents complete with modern British colloqialisms ("Bollocks") while the support cast usually are Italians speaking English.

TIVO season pass so I don't miss any episodes. It's funny that Pullo (sp?) is portrayed as one of the movers and shakers of the ancient world.

Note that the reenactors I posted aren't wearing bracelets. I don't know when it became a convention in Roman movies for male Romans to wear big bracelets but Roman men hated the idea of arm jewelry and thought it very effeminate.

Indeed, at the time the Rome series is set Romans also thought trousers were effeminate and guys like Caesar, Octavian and Antony would never have worn them as they sometimes do on the show, nor did legionaries of the time wear them.

Trousers were also thought a sign of Barbarism as they were worn by Celts, Germans and Parthians. Though by the First Century service on the Rhine and Danube frontiers started making trousers acceptable though it seems the legionaries didn't wear them as much as the auxiliaries did.
