Best movie to wake up your subwoofer
 

anyone got good suggestions of movies to "wake" and "quake" your subwoofer?

I find it a goodun' in the film "Speed" (IMAX), in the scene where Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier. The sonic boom is, well, booming. :thmbsp:

It's hard to top the scene with the Balrog in the extended edition of Lord of the Rings.

Star Trek VI - The scene where Sulu and the Excelsior get hit by the shockwave! :yes:

I've been told that Jurassic Park is a classic for this. But I'm not a big fan of the movie.

The sea battles in Master & Commander are pretty spectacular. Nothing like broadsides from a couple ships o' the line to perk up your sleeping subs. :yes:

War of The Worlds is without a doubt the king of sub busters. . . Use care with some of these movies and your volume control. This is a movie known for busting great subwoofers. . .


Of course the classics like "LOTR" will get you going. . .


Most Action Adventure movies made during the last 20 years especially the last ten years (remember Indiana Jones etc.) has a killer audio track with a ton of low freq energy. . . Effects./\. . .

Blackhawk Down is known to have very strong 5 Hz content. Of course you need shakers to get down there, but it's possible if you have, say, a multi-driver infinite baffle with good amplification down to DC.

My favorite is the M&C battle scene, first one. Probably because of the dynamic range in the first five minutes.

Set your volume control to -10db (if you have log readout) and go put the remote in the farthest corner of the house. If you listen carefully, you can hear the crew of the Acheron scuffling about just before the cannon flash. If your system can take it, oooh baby. (I usually flinch and cut the volume).

I used to run an SVS 20-39 and it never bottomed. Now I have a pair of SVS drivers in 1.25 ft sealed cabs. Jury is still out.

Finding Nemo actually has a lot of "subliminal" bass. Whenever they want things to get eery, they play these ultra low tones. This trick is used in a lot of movies. It's a good test, because if your sub is set too high, it won't be subconscious any more, it'll cross over into conscious; if you have it set too low, you won't hardly hear it at all, and the eeriness will be lost on you.

Try the movie STEALTH. It has tons of special effects. lots of deep bass and on top of that its a darn good movie!!

IIRC, it was the one of the last Star War movies which has a chase scene in an asteroid belt and the first ship being chased drops these bombs on the second ship that have a strange warbling sound before exploding. Ultra low bass in this scene.

If you have a system that can do LOUD and CLEAN at the same time, (most can't, mine = not quite) then the little part where Mr. T Rex roars into the camera during the car crush scene is reeeely good. Not necessarily for bass, but for sheer pee-your-pants loudness. :banana:

the trick is not muting the horable movie

Assuming your referring to the new WOTW. This is true! I watched this movie last summer through my Altecs and even at moderate volume the woofers cones looked like they were gonna pop out of their frames during those lightning strikes! I backed the volume WAY down after that!

What a Blast! -- DTS version.

XXX - the movie - Motorcycles, explosions and helicopters give the sub a nearly non-stop workout.

Same here exept I was using my RS-1080 through 4 JBL studio's with my bass set at 3+,bass EQ on and the bass range bumped up to about 50%. I had the floor shaking like I had never heard music sound that hard before.Good movie,but I had to ease up on the knob though.A nother good one I had the house shaking to the othernight was Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift.Awsome movie also. :smoke:

Not a good movie but the first 10 minutes of Lost In Space is pretty impressive sound wise.

You guys missed Enemy at the gates. A recent WW2 war movie Russian and German snipers battle it out) with some terrific battle scenes near the beginning and end plus a few bombing runs in the middle. Time to crank it!

If you want sub effects at an appropriate level for the scene (rather than just always loud), try Pirates of the Caribbean - really done right IMHO

My kids have all the Jurassic movies. It's true, my Sunfire JR. has been known to literally leap from it's perch during certain stomps.

Ice Age, the beginning sequence with the squirrel and the glacier cracking. Nice.
But the Balrog scene is a definative one for the reference books.

A second for the Balrog scene. Any of the Lord of the Ring movies has some great low end content.

Looks like Happy Feet is going to be thee one.

Two more to add-

From personal experience, Children of Men has some great subwoofer scenes.

And recently, Das Boat was recommended to me.

Lots of good ones, but I think WOTW is still the king of the sub busters.

Also, I think U-571 is OK too on the depth charge scenes.

Darla tapping on the fish tank in Finding Nemo caught me off guard with the wave that sends.

When Jody Foster first recieves the alien broadcast of the prime numbers and played it in the control room, the low end harmonics gets things shaking pretty good.

The director's cut re-release of "Das Boot" is pretty impressive. DTS or DolDig re-mix available.

You go from the breathless silence in the sub punctuated by pipes groaning and relays clicking to:

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

When the British destroyers start dropping charges.
Woke up my neighbors.

Also, I can imagine 'Black Hawk Down' must be a sub punisher. I worked the pre-premiere of the film at the best theatre in DC, and they did a test run just redlining the system; that is without a doubt one of the most consistently loud and slamming mixes I have ever heard.
