First European colour tv
 

Hi Ak'ers,

last week I was on a holiday in the Netherlands. There I visited Marcel near s'Hertogenbosch. He has one of the first colour tv sets which were produced by Philips. This set might be from 1963 or 1964:

The picture quality is impressive. He uses this set as a daily watcher. Some more photos will follow.

All I can say is WOW !! Excellent picture....Did you get a chance to look inside of it ? Who made the CRT? Was it an RCA clone? Now, THAT would be something to find in an antique shop or yard sale...<grin>

The CRT is genuine RCA. It is a 21FBP22. Marcel has put some more photos on the web in his television museum:

(You have to read Dutch. He is not very familiar with English. For myself, I can read Dutch, it is a mixture of English and old-fashioned German. But it is hard to understand the spoken language.)

What BEAUTIFUL workmanship on that chassis! Looks like a mil-spec job.

And another WOW; a BROWN BASE 21FBP22??? In USA tubes, a brown base usually means an industrial version of the tube. Wonder if this is an industrial CRT?

Looks like they lined the inside of the cabinet w/aluminum to keep X-ray emissions down...or keep interference down too...Again, Wow....

This might be correct. The K4 made for export to Canada. It is an NTSC receiver. Later the K4 was upgrated with a PAL unit. In Europe this set was used for experiments. It was never sold in the shops.

Marcel himself lined the inside of the cabinet w/aluminium. The K4 does not have a shunt regulator.

Hello, It is for me the first time to that I on these forum a bulletin writes. My English is unfortunately not best. On my Internet site stand up a number of Mustangs. I am itself also owner of a Mustang convertible from 1966 with 289 V8 engine. I collect also TVs and old vcr's.
In the Netherlands you can buy dvd's with old American tv programs, I look these old programs on my Philips K4 TV.

? No shunt regulator in the K4? How did they get away with that?

Don't worry! My English was very bad when I start to write English emails. But the efforts are worthwhile. There are many fantastic people all around the world which share our interests.And errors in the English writings will not be punished here :yes: (I hope so?!)
The high voltage is regulated by a reference impulse from the flyback transformer which is given on the grid of the triode of PCF80 (Rö 302T). I don't know whether picture width might react to changing in the beam currents. But I have a similar function in my Saba color (without shunt regulator) which is operating well.
BTW: The majority of these tv sets went to Canada. I think it must be easier to obtain such a set on the American continent than in Europe.

And I like your Mustang also! I had a red 1966 Mustang coupe many years ago. I still like the design!

Thanks for good welcome on these forum.
I have put a video of the Philips K4 on the web.
The BROWN BASE 21FBP22 comes from a monitor who is used in France. Furthermore I have new 21FBP22 on stock. These have I bought in the Netherlands.
The Philips K4's in Canada has a another model number then the European versions, unfortunately I do not know these numbers.
I lined the inside of the cabinet with ordinary paint. Orgineel are this also white but discoloured by smoking. By the flashlight of the photograph
this more white becomes. The Philips K4 on my website is my other K4, these are still in the old state.

What a real beauty of a set. I never thought PAL was a bad system, and that picture tells me alot.

We still like Bewitched in my house too.

wow ...i always wondered how many early experimental PAL sets were out there ...even if the K4 started as a NTSC unit...mmm....

Hey, nice TV set, Marcel! There is one other person that owns one, I think he is in the UK, his site is www.oldtechnology.net. I think his is a dual standard, it can receive the old British 405 line system. Keep up the good work!
