An Admiral followed me home today......
 

A 60s vintage B&W portable 17” Admiral to be exact. $25 on Craigslist and it works! Not sure what model/chassis but that will come later when I pull the back off......

It has UHF, so it has to be 1964 or newer. I would say mid-60's.

Still not sure about the chassis number, but definitely past 1964, we have UHF and compactrons. Dirty filthy needs a clean and a recap but not immediately. All tubes are Admiral so it might be a low-ish hour set

That was a good performing set, considering it has only two stages of IF.
It has keyed AGC, that's why! It doesn't show a HV rectifier tube. It must use that strange campactron type that only has two pins.

This was the last of the good mid priced Admiral B&W sets.
After that the were basically better GE's all based on the same
compactrons. When they went SS they were a solid set. Sadly
after a few yrs of building good sets again Rockwell killed them off.

Yeah this is a great little set. I peeked in the HV cage briefly, looks like a regular 9 pin HV rectifier to me. I blew all the crud out of it, most capacitors looked like polystyrene types, but it had the white tubular type which are bombs lol

We’ll get a recap in at some point, I got too much taken apart at the moment.....

Did anyone reputable ever make a tube TV with just one IF stage?

Two stages seemed to be common, even on cheap color sets (CTC-20!). Did tubes get that good, or did set makers get that cheap?

I think Muntz had a 1 stage video IF portable in the late 50s early 60s...In their case it was cheapness, but in late 60s sets fewer IFs were typically because better gain tubes were being used.

I don't think I have ever seen a tube layout diagram which didn't show the HV rectifier. If one looks closely at this tube layout diagram, it looks like the idea for this diagram is to show how the series heaters are wired and since the HV rectifier is not a part of the filament string, it was not shown.

I remember seeing an Olympic with one IF stage, (6EJ7). I saw it in a early 60's Supreme manual. The strange thing was, the set had a full power transformer and 5U4. :scratch2:

Seems like the challenge of designing an IF strip was to get the required bandwidth, which required stagger-tuning of stages, which required sufficient gain per tube. With development of frame grid tubes (6EH7, 6EJ7 etc), the 2-stage layout became the limit of practicality.

It must be a slightly later model the used that crazy HV rect.

Here are some pics of the 1AY2. It's weird looking, to say the least.

The 1966 Supreme manual shows the chassis was used in a 23" set as well.

I got around to swapping all the Elmencos and electrolytics, put in a new 33gy7 (horizontal out/damper), swapped the 17jz8 (vertical/osc) which stopped the vertical shrinking. The vertical fills back in as the set warms up and there's some wavyness at the top of the picture but otherwise it's looking good.

Yes IIRC it was a 1AY2 Zenith used it in a few mid 60's chassii.
A real odd ball like the GE lead HV rect.
