Free '50s Zenith portable in Massachusetts
 

Picked this up years ago and a kind AKer sent me a Sams page for it, but I never had time to fiddle with it. Zenith B1717J with some awesome jet age styling. Had no vertical scan last time I tried it so needs recapping.

Free to anyone who wants to pick it up northeast of Boston, and I'll include the Sams.

I have one similar to that one, stying-wise. Mine is a hot chassis model, series heaters, 450 ma.
They made a better model, power transformer and 5U4. That's the one, I really want. :yes:

Is the back correct, or was it swapped from a brown model?

It does seem funny that the back would be brown! I think, you're right in your observation. :scratch2:

CHassis # 15B20. Pretty sure it is a hot chassis... Sams 426-1
I haVe at least one of the cold ones like this one AND a 13 or 14" "bug-eye" model also cold chassis. Think BOTH of them use a 16C20 chassis. thought hat one had gotten grabbed in the robbery...but evidently NOT--since it DID make the last move to the new garage of mine...

I don't think, the smaller bug-eye models had a transformer chassis. I know the 21" model did.

Don't forget that a power transformer can produce a stray magnetic field that could beat with the CRT's deflection, causing slow waves. And if it's a portable set, it would weigh more. And cost more. :D

So hot chassis designs did have some merits, once it's packaged inside the cabinet.

I've seldom saw a small set that had that problem. Transformer powered small screen sets were rather rare. The Emerson and RCA 8" had a full power transformer power supply, using a voltage doubler and the 14" RCA used a 5U4 type supply.
You're right, they were rather heavy for a small screen set. :scratch2:

My grandparents had one pretty much like that. Don't remember what color the back was.

Did zeno pick it up?

There isn't actually a front or back half. It's a one-piece steel cabinet and the paint is original. Because in the jet age everything will be two-tone.

Zeno should be here to pick it up any minute now.

It is a series set. Only thing on the outside is the
almost always rotted handle. Looks real good otherwise.
Will let you all know how it works out. I will save it
for the bad WX to restore.
BTW the Swampscott PD kindly gave us an escort to
Johns street. After circling lost in Lynn, the city of sin,
he figured it was best before I was car jacked !
I did quickly find my way out of civilization & back to
the woods.

Didn't realize your trip was quite that exciting. What part of Lynn did they feel you needed rescuing from? I don't even bother carrying a gun unless it's the downtown central square area.

Seemed like I kept on landing in Lynn ! The numbers of the
road kept dissapering ! I didnt bother asking for directions
nobody would have understood me. It was almost as bad
as when the Irish took over the cities !!! At one point I had a car
load of hoodlums behind me pointing. I knew I could out run them
easily. Finally flagged a copper & he had me follow him.
We can CCW in I think its 20 states now but not Mass we were
alone. Usually a 40 for me & a 357 for the wife. Up here only
carry in Manchester & Nashua at night. I would add Lynn to
that list and day time too !!!
