Zenith flat CRT HDTV
 

I am on the lookout for one of these sets, and I am looking for some info on them. I believe they are one of the last sets made to have a Zenith chassis and Zenith design, is anyone familiar with them? I believe they are from around 2001-2003.

I have that same set and I love it fantastic picture blows any set away and I love it.Attachment 187584 I don't know who made the tube but wow what a picture.

Yes, some were like this. I have a Prima that's the same way too.

What resolution were those, higher than 480p?

Apparently 1080i... so 1440x1080?

It was still 1920x1080, it just resized the picture vertically by adjusting the v-size on it's own so no lines were lost.

I dont think this is a true Zenith chassis. The last flat
CRT Zenith sets we sold were made by Daewoo ! That
would have been just before this set. The latest real Zenith chassis is
probably in the consoles which were the last Zeniths we sold
( franchised 1958).

I never knew a Daewoo was under the hood til one came in for service
with a bad FBT. I almost crapped myself !
Anyhows Daewoo was an odd duck. If it had Daewoo brand on it
it was a POS. Any other brand on it even the same chassis was
a good set. Go figure :scratch2:

Such sets were fairly common in the early days of HD displays. They were much less expensive than the 16:9 sets available in that era. None of them had built-in digital tuners that I am aware of. They typically went into "letterbox" 16:9 mode when switched to an HD input (component video or RGB/"VGA").
Most of them accepted a 1080i input via component or RGB; some also accepted 720p. The actual resolution is/was probably about 720p (1280x720), in the 16:9 area of the CRT.

I know that S0ny produced several 16:9 CRT HDTV sets... who else made 16:9 CRT sets? Wouldn't these be fairly collectable? Bet they weighed a ton.

The D line would do 1080i, but only from an external input. Circuitry and deflection was basically an LG Computer monitor, with an NTSC tuner and sound tacked in. I've only seen two - one with a cracked case (owner tried to carry it through a door on his shoulder) and one at a conference, unrelated to TVs. C line sets would do 1080i and VGA, to 800x600, IIRC, and yes, were not Zenith sets, but had Zenith labels for the three modules - power supply, main board, and CRT board. I have spec sheets for them in PDF here somewhere.

I've seen RCA and Toshiba 16X9 CRT sets....

it looks like a zenith chassis when I looked inside trough the vent. its such a fantastic set I don't who made it. the set will only do 480i or 1080i through the vga input but makes a nice computer monitor.

Panasonic had their Tau series of 16:9 sets. I had a 30" one I got from Portsmouth (VA) City public schools for 25 bucks , but with the cable box output, I could never get anything other than letterboxed 1080i. It was like watching a small computer monitor. Panasonic had one Tau DVD player that worked with it, but other than that, no other accessories or ATSC tuners.

Samsung made 16:9 CRT sets at least until late 2003. I know because I found one and brought it home.

Does it have the 1/4" hex screws holding the back on like all American sets had? That to me would be a giveaway. It's been a long time since I saw one of these and I can't remember.

I owned an LG made flat crt SD set that Zenith had out in '99 with the A and B lines, but it was a complete LG design. When this one came out in 2002 or so I wanted to upgrade but couldn't justify it since the other one was such a good performer. Wishing I had now!

well its Phillips head but the way the inside looks like zenith the type of wires, the plugs and the heat sinks plus the color of the chassis is that white colored board. I could be wrong if lg designed they did a good job. by the way it uses the zenith original remote code. I have a lg built zenith built 3 years later and the oem remote does not work. the service menu uses the original zenith access. The later zenith the Tripler part of the fly back opened up and have to buy the sweep module, but that chassis color of the board looks different the plug and the wires are different. on the 02 set you can get hd signals from the component inputs. I wish I could find the digital tuner unit you could buy to go with it. dtv tuner you could use the vga input or component.

Philips was another manufacturer of 16:9 CRT HDTV or HD-ready sets sold in the USA.

In Europe, widescreen standard-def sets and programming were very common, even back to before 2000.

Look for an HD-SAT520 or (I think) DTV420 model. They are both Zenith-branded HD tuners that perform very well. I still have a '520 here that I bought when I was working in Texas in 2003. It is a combo over-the-air/DirecTV receiver that can be used just fine in OTA-only mode. You used to be able to connect a DirecTV dish to the tuner, even without a subscription, and get free high-quality guide information for the OTA channels, but I have not tried that in years.

DTV1080s were available for a while - I haven't seen many lately though. Useable with NTSC/ATSC and Direct Tv, but folks around here used them as tuners for their overblown VGA monitors and projectors.

I have the Sony 34" XBR series flat CRT with the dual tuner and Super Fine Pitch CRT. It is the only one they made with the tuner/CRT combo. The color rendition is spectacular. Geometry was a bit off until I figured out the service menu. Had to replace one board for the usual 7-blink death. I saved it to change the chips some day. While it was open, I set the internal focus and did more in the menu. It is HD but not quite up to a modern version. I have seen them on Craigslist for free. Just carry away all 200 pounds.

And you can also look for the Samsung SIR series of tuners. Quite good here with a rooftop antenna and 30 miles from the sticks. 30+ channels on component and DVI.

Have seen a few on CL in Ohio over the years. Not worth mentioning without knowing where the OP is, as the seller is unlikely to ship, and the set it unlikely to survive...
