Classic Sci-Fi and Horror
 

I have begun building up my movie collection with some really great classic Sci-Fi and Horror flicks lately and I was wondering what everyone's favorites are out there? For me it's tough to beat Creature from Black Lagoon :yes:.

I watched something recently (that looked like it was from the early 60s judging by the cars in it) called The Man with X-Ray Eyes that I thought was very good.

Great question! I'd love to get more classic movies to watch (anything before my time, meaning 60's and earlier, particularly B&W). I haven't seen a whole bunch (yet) so take my suggestions with a grain of salt, but I enjoyed the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Day of the Triffids. I'm sure you've already thought of these, but of course there are Alfred Hitchcock's such as Psycho and The Birds. Another one I've loved since I was a kid was The Time Machine.

I second that...it would be hard to beat either of those classics.

Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still, & he told us where it began....

Village Of The Damned is good. Those kids with the glowing eyes still creep me out.

That, & the white hair....

look to the works of Roger Corman, often a bit campy but still fun.

anything with Vincent Price in it

the blob is good has cross over appeal (horror/steve McQ)

one of my quirkier favs is "frogs" a later Ray Milland offering

Peter Cushing did some good ones in the 60's like "the skull".

Both fantastic and in my library! The Carnegie Science Center here in Pittsburgh has a robot collection and both Robbie and Gort are on display. Robby will occasionally talk and do the scene where the cook is asking him to make "the good stuff." I'd love to have a Fred Barton robot some day. I think there's a member here who has a Fred Barton B-9....maybe he'll share a snapshot?

I got FP, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers on VHS, Day of the Triffids too...

I was always amazed at movie robots, especially the 60's robots... The ones
today in some cases seem less practical. The new Lost in space robot looks
way less practical then the original..... I always wanted to make one, and
every once in a while I search the old B-9 on google. I was quite surprised
when I found the robot b-9 builders club. They do some really amazing work...

The Tingler.....Vincent Price.....scared the Hell out of me when I was a kid.

Another Vincent Price classic was "The House on Haunted Hill". :thmbsp:

I watched "The Bat" last week with Vincent Price and added "Before I Hang" to my library but I haven't seen that one yet.

not sci fi, but more of a thriller, is Fritz Lang's "M" Recently found it on laserdisc, its really good. its the role that made Peter Lorre a star, playing many creepy characters over the years.

I would throw this one out there: the 1958 original "The Fly" movie with David Hedison (Capt Crane on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea). As a little kid in the 60's it scared the crap out of me.

On my list, as is The Fly 2: Return of the Fly, and The Curse of the Fly. I should be getting those in a few weeks.

I always liked the "Zombie" movies. They didn't have a reflection, only humans can see them. They never walked in front of a mirror. :D

Yeah, that's what I thought, too...

The Haunting (1963) is one of my favorites. It's more atmospheric than most horror movies, leaving a lot to the imagination. The scenes in the bedroom where they hear voices and banging on the walls creep me out. At one point the walls seem to move. The movie was directed by Robert Wise right before he did The Sound of Music. Don't bother with the re-make. Get the original.

Val Lewton's movies are also worth checking out. The Cat People (1942) is worth watching, as is I Walked With a Zombie (1943), speaking of zombies above. Turner Classic Movies has lots of good horror movies on in October, if you have access to that.

Planet of the vampires, "Contamination" can be fun but strange, "Squirm" is fun! If I was home I could name dozens!

Also...a guilty pleasure...."The Walking Dead".

Killer Shrews, original War of the Worlds, From Hell it came (ridiculous but funny!), original Invaders from Mars, The Mole People, Enemy from Space, The 27th day, Kronos (the sci fi version with Jeff Morrow), Fiend without a Face, The lost missile, The Manster (loads of fun!).
And there are more at home!

I want to do outdoor screenings of these movies at my home. I have a 133" screen that I mount to a tree and take a projector home for outdoor movies/sporting events. Too bad we all live in different parts of the country:sigh:. Every one in my local circle of friends thinks I'm cooky for watching old B&W movies/TV shows.

For classic sci fi I always enjoyed the original The Day of the Triffids film, 1962 and The Hills have Eyes, the 70s version.

Incubus if you haven't seen it and if you like outer limits its a horror movie done by the same team including the music.......... black sabbath ... so many more
