I made a reference to "Fargo" in a thread recently. One of my others is American Beauty. These films didn't achieve numbers below without reason:yes::yes:.

When I first saw it, 50 years ago, I couldn't believe it. I never saw a movie, that was made so crude and low-budget, but it was actually quite good.
It really became a "Cult-classic". :thmbsp:

I'd advise anybody who HASN'T seen it to rent a copy of "Thunderbolt & Lightfoot"... GREAT early/mid-Seventies Clint Eastwood flick w/Jeff Bridges, George Kennedy, & Clint's longtime co-star, Geoffrey Lewis. A Seventies flick that could NOT be made today... Anybody who was around back then will understand that, the others WON'T...

I've never saw that movie, but are you referring to the non-PC content, similar to "Blazing Saddles"?
I never saw that movie either, until a year ago, when I found one at a thrift.

Not so much that its not PC, its just the whole crazy mess...Its a sort of "Buddy" movie, but unlike any other "Buddy" movie you ever saw...

Take, f'r instance the scene where they get picked by the crazy guy in the black 2-door, jacked-up Plymouth... Which they roll, wreck & the guy gets out, grabs a shotgun, opens the trunk, which is full of little white bunnies... I mean, WTF is up w/THAT ? But in the movie, it made PERFECT sense... Sort of..

Ed Wood, the Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp as Ed Wood Jr.

Helps a lot if you're an Ed Wood fan of course.

Pink Flamingos, directed by John Waters, the same guy who later made Hairspray.

Definitely not for everyone, (or anyone of tender sensibilities), it incredibly raunchy and obscene but also very funny in a black humor sort of way.

Cost $10,000 to make, made millions.

Billed as "An exercise in bad taste" when it was released, that's a gross understatement.

This film used to be really hard to find, after the 25th anniversary release it became so easy that it was selling in Big Lots stores, I can't imagine how the unsuspecting buyer must have reacted when they took it home and popped it in the DVD player!:eek::wtf:

I must also include "Pulp Fiction" if for no other reason than the great lineup of actors Quentin Tarantino grabbed and how bizarre the "story" line(s) were...

My favorite "cult" movie is Used Cars, from 1980. The cult is very small, though. I think there are about five of us in it. We can recite every line, and make references to it in every day life constantly. :)

LOVED used cars... "That price is tooooo f**king high!" BOOM!!

The Hollywood Knights....... "Vooooolare---RRRRIIIP!!"

And yes.... XANADU..... ONJ was hot to this 15yr old :D

Used cars and the other classic, "Car Wash", seemed to attract the same kind of audience.
I got a copy of "Used Cars" at a thrift. I think, I only saw it once before.
Slightly OOT, How about the dame, that has 500 copies of "Speed". I think, every thrift in the country, has one or more copies. I didn't think, that movie was that good. :boring:

Brian DePalma's FIRST film, "Sisters" from 1973. Shot entirely on Long Island, it also features the LAST score by the late, great Bernard Herrmann. His music pretty much MAKES the film, w/its freaky, "World-Out-Of-Kilter" sound.

but then as I remember reviewers didn't like it much..... And they made good
car chase movies back then.... Now they don't think anything about
Matrixing up a car chase till you just sit there disappointed.....

Yeah, CGI style car chases leave me cold.. Gimme a "Bullitt", Seven-Ups" or "Gone in 60 Seconds"-the 1974 version, only-ANY day over all that computer-generated nonsense. "Vanishing Point", the 1970 version w/Barry Newman, is also a Good 'Un. ALL the CGI crap in the world CAN'T out-do Cubic Inches, & skillful driving. When will these dimwits get that thru their thick skulls ?!?

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Amazing acting, especially Chief!! :-)

Great screen presence in spite of a lack of dialogue, just like Morgan Woodward in Cool Hand Luke.

Martini (De Vito) , McMurphy, Billy Bibbet, Cheswick. Some incredible charactors that you never forget. Love Chief's first line in the movie, when McMurphy passes him a stick of gum, " Mmmm, Juicy fruit" One of my faves!!

Other one, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Watched it with my 12 and 16 yearolds recently and they LOVED it!!! Especially the music!!

Not to keep beating a dead horse to death here on this topic; does anyone remember S.O.B. (Blake Edwards film)? Definately a different Julie Andrews character compared to those in the 1960's likes of The Sound of Music, Marry Poppins, etc.

On a side note, I finally saw Jaws all the way through. I saw the last of it about 20 years ago, never forgetting the line "Smile you son of a..."

A sound effect used in this scene is the same one used at the end of Duel.

Too bad Toby bought it filming the follow up to "Gone..." The scene where Eleanor charges thru Moran Cadillac, leaving Death 'n' Destruction.... Well, "Destruction", anyhow, is CLASSIC, especially the poor secretary's reaction... "Gone" has absolutely no socially redeeming values at all, its just 90 minutes of pure, unadulterated, take-your-mind-out-of-Gear FUN...I LOVED it in '74 when I was 17, & dammitt, I STILL do at 57...

Hey Jon, I think Duel is one of the most underrated films of its time. Definitely a favorite over here!

Yah Duel is one of my favorite films..... That is one tough Dodge....
