Been offered a free Quasar.....
 

Normally I don't consider stuff this new for myself, but this is kind of a neat set....perhaps someone can enlighten me on it :)

This is the message I got:

"Tim, we have a Quasar Console TV, model WU9428YP, with manual, the date on the back says 1985.. It has been in our garage since at least 2000, when my husbands grandmother died.. Not sure if it works.. But you are welcome to it, if you would like it... "

1985 is long after the sale to Matsushita, so this must be a "Panasonic?"

Likely will have that chassis that EATS flybacks---and the fly is likely mounted on a vertical board bear the rear cover...

But if you like those--go for it. I do NOT like those chassis, nor do I miss them. hot, chintzy and flyback-killers, like a lot of 19*80's sets.

Unusual appearance for its year, free and no more than 15 years on the clock, so why not? A real stripper set, less to go wrong.

i second his motion. i never liked those sets. actually hated to work one one.

also, the picture tubes didn't last long. I had a late 80's/early 90's Quasar, that was a top of the line set. Had built in Dolby DBX sound. It had the best sound of any TV I've owned, but the picture tube went south when the set was less than 10 years old.

Yep, I do believe I will.....

I am not as negative on the set as other BUT.
There is nothing exciting about the set. Its a bottom of line
mid grade TV. The cabinet is boring, it has no special features &
its not rare. If it has a STRONG CRT it may be worth getting for
the jug.
It leaves me, shall we say LIMP.
There is much better stuff out there for free.

The cabinet could use a bit more ornamentation, but it's too much that really bugs me. The set may not be rare, but it's not the ubiquitous RCA of that era and that particular feature set, or lack of special features may be hard to come by on one of these, sort of like an '80 T-Bird with vinyl top delete.

Funny you should say that, I had a 1980 Thunderbird with vinyl top delete :D

man.. I thought those 1980 T-Birds were the COOLEST cars when they came out.

Isn't that somethin'? Haha. I knew you had some Fox 'Birds but not that exact model. I had only ever heard of one other and I'm not even sure if it was an '80.

Seeing as it has been sitting for a while...maybe the CRT is still strong? If you can get it for free it would be great to see it work. As for me I like 80's TV, and I think this one looks good, so I would grab it myself.:yes:

I don't remember those being too bad. Quasar was always popular in my neck of the woods due to a strong wholesale distributor nearby, so we worked on plenty of them.

I think the flyback number was TLF14423F and the same chassis was used in some GE televisions. On just about every one of these that came my way; the CRT was weak and the flyback, along with the NTE89 horizontal output transistor, was bad. Also, the PC board chassis was garbage and there were always bad solder connections on the power resistors and other heat generating components.

I dunno, guys-I sorta have a "Rule-Of-Thumb" that if anybody offers me something FREE like that, I take it. My thinking is thus-The item in question may be 100% Junque, but at least THAT person was thinking of me... If I DON'T take it, the NEXT time that person runs across something that he/she thinks I might like, they WON'T call/tell me...

If the people that wanted to get rid of it, would fire it up to see if it has a raster and no-signal noise in the sound, it would be worth considering.
Chances are, it probably still works, otherwise, they wouldn't have taken it along, if it didn't work at all. The CRT condition is any ones guess. :scratch2:

Thing is, with two "new" 19AP4 type sets working their way into the basement, I have to be careful as to what I choose to bring in. Sure, it'd be kinda neat, but my interest in it would pass quickly even if it did work. And with their less than reliable reputation, well....

As Sandy said before--it MIGHT be a good idea to get it--even if you just have to turn around and toss it out---as doing such MIGHT open the door to something a LOT better soon. If they know you pick up old tv sets--then they will be a LOT more likely to remember you the next time someone they know has or knows of an old tv to get rid of. In the past--I have had to accept trash--in order to keep the door open to get "jewels",. from people. Who knows--maybe soon--they will call you to tell you about a Zenith flat-chassis set--or even a roundie color set, maybe even a bit of old HI-FI stuff or radios. . But if you refuse this one--likely that will not happen.

Doubt it. These particular people know me well enough that they'd offer me anything they came across, if they did. The power of Facebook :)
