1966 motorola 23 inch color
 

i have this motorola color and it works fine since i got it done but it always had little red streaks of red on the edges of whites. i have not figured out why or how to get rid of it. all the other colors are fine just the white. any ideas anyone? if i post a pic it may not be seen.

Does it go away when you turn the color down?
If so good chance its the crt. How are the emissions at 5 volts? If the emissions show good at 6.3volts but sharply drop off as you lower the voltage to 5 I would be looking at the crt.
Red bleed and smearing are one of the signs of a tired crt.

with the color down the last i tried it still was there. ill have to try the crt test at 5 volts.

Yea always test down to 5 volts. A usable crt will show good at 6.3, a strong crt with good life left will show good down to 5 or lower

i did have a hard time converging this set as its alittle different then the rcas and i have tried to get that red smear out when i converged it but no good. so it could still be a crt issue?

Not if its doing it with the color off. Unless itts a crappy rebuild and it won't converge right.

Give me the model number, I have a load of motorola factory service data and it may have better instructions on the convergence. Sams are 'quick and dirty' when it comes to detailed stuff.

its a 1966 908 chassis with the converge adjustments in front, i dont like this setup. the sams states to use the bar gen and then make the final adustments in the front as well as the 2 drives in the rear to get the best black and white pic.

I worked on a lot of 23" Motorolas and they sets were notorious for having bad tube sockets, especially the ones along the rear of the chassis (demods I believe). Tap (all) the tubes with the handle end of a nut driver and see what happens. Hopefully nothing. Let us know.

I believe a Motorola Guru by the name of Forest H Belt wrote a book on servicing Motorola's. It was a Tab Books (now McGraw Hill) and no doubt out of print.

My $.02: If you turn down the contrast or brightness and the schmear goes away, the CRT may need a "kid-gloves" belt with your CRT tester.

Is this CRT a 23EGP22?

yes its the 23egp22 and was rebuilt in 1982. KIDS - GLOVES, ? booster ???

kid gloves= gently, lightly. he means use the lowest restore setting on your CRT tester and zap it. usually the "clean" function.

If it shows good with a good life test or still good when tested at 5v or less on the heater, I'd leave it alone.

I agree. Retest it first before you make that decision.

Ohh I dont think, the TV dispensing its modern culture propaganda programming trash has disabled the 'think' function in my brain.

I will say Dan does not restore/rejuvenate crts anymore. The risk of making it worse is to high. Deal with it.

Start looking for a 25AP/XP22 to use as a replacement. We were able to squeeze a lot of them in place of the 23EGP without the need for a mounting kit. You'll need it sooner or later.

Good advise. I never saw a 23EGP22 that was worth a damn.

Turn that frown upside down! There is no shortage of ap/gp/cp/xp22s. If you have the mechanical skills you can fit it in.

ok i do have the skills but i am not all that fond of this set anyway but as i write this i am about to check this crt at 5 volts so ill be back shortly with the news.

ok testing at 5 volts the blue and green is good but the red is alittle low otherwise everything tests really good. i did check for those whisker shorts and they were there but i burned them out. i then checked it at 6 volts and everything was like new.

Leave it alone and just watch it. More tvs will come your way. Before you know it you will have 50 of them. :banana:

well i dont know what the deal is here but i wonder if i had this set tuned wrong because i just retuned it and adjusted the color and damit the red lines or smear is gone. crazy tvs.......@#@$%$^&$#....

It sounds like you have the "gift". kinda like those dousers (water finders)

I have a set I'll trade ya for that. Its a 1972 Motorola Quasar TS938, 100% solid state WID REMOTE control, the CRT is a 25V... and is good. Love those 60's color Motorola sets, always looking but few sold in this area.

well i listed this motorola on the i think its called etc, early television classifieds for what i got it for and what i put in it.

Seems like a waste after all the time and energy you put into that thing. You should just keep it and deal with it.

I hated those tube Motorola's... by far, the WORSE set of its day.

Suspect poor crimps where the wires connect to the socket pins. Ive seen this cause smear and changing grey-scale, FYI

well it does work nice and now that i realize i had the tuning messed up its all good but it was a learning period for me and besides if someone really loves motorolas then maybe this is what they should have,lol. if no one wants it then it will stay put and ill watch it from time to time like i do already, i just like the roundies better.:thmbsp:

I agree, they were a challenge. I personally saw way too many Sears Color sets of that era. IMO Sears was the worst.:thumbsdn: No Wards around here.

We could have used more Admirals and Sylvanias :yes:(and fewer GE and Sears) in the late 60s, I thought they were under-rated.

You're thinking of the small chassis, TS 914 and simular. I had the big chassis. ETS 908. I ran it for ten years, until the 23EGP22 started looking rather sick.
They were a lot better than those lousy GE's of the time. :thumbsdn:

My family had a 1966 or 67 Motorola. It had a color indicator... neon light... to let me know if the set was receiving color. It got 3 CRT's during the warranty. The picture would start out looking really good, then it'd get slowly darker and darker over time. When #3 tube began to die, we got a Magnavox, and never looked back. I ran the Motorola in my bedroom until it totally died.

those motos were terrible!the picture was gawd awful.other than the crts,they were very good sets electronically.i had 2 of those in my basement back in the 70s.crts were strong but looked hideous.swapped out with a sylvania,(hard to get it to mount proper) but the picture was very good.used it as a spare before it got flooded.my dad saw those in the store when new and marveled at the chassis.he didnt care for the crt though

I had a TS 914 table model with 23EGP22 and color indicator. I do remember a rather "unreal" color picture though the CRT tested good. I always though there was a demod issue but I was used to 6GY6 circuits that RCA used , but the 6LE8 operation in Motorolas made no sense. I did like the way they were put together.

I've got a 67 Airline which is basically a rectangular clone of a roundy RCA chassis. The thing was WELL kept by the previous owners and all I've had to do to it is adjustments so far.....But I do need to fix that damn open mystery value vertical centering pot soon cause since the move and purity redo I can't fill the mask while keeping decent linearity.

It did reduce the parts count considerably. :D
When new those sets put out knock-your-socks-off reds and oranges that might be considered "unreal" by comparison to other brands using standard demod layouts.
