CTC20 portable!
 

Been watching this for a few days trying to figure out how to get it to PA. It's the deal of the day. No ideas so you sharks can jump in here. I never saw this arrangement before. And it is working and from a collector. Anyone here?

It's hardy a portable but rather the standard metal cabinet table model. They were generally shipped with optional screw-on legs. I never saw a '20 with a custom rollaround stand like that before.

It's more portable than a portable spa! :)

But yes, the correct term is table model. It's the cart that's portable.

Does it come with a degaussing coil?

Yes, standard issue on all 20's.

Auto-degauss was standard with CTC-16 onward.

No big miss at that price, though it looks real nice. CTC20 was RCA's first real "budget" color set after everyone else was selling their own rectangular tube set. It is not equal to the 16X in quality, because it uses the cheaper two-board CTC19/20/24 chassis.

The competition for the budget market in 1967 was the Magnavox T938, Philco 17MT80 and GE CB-21. I wonder how many other makes had one of these.

The metal cabinet, base model CTC16E didn't have a degausser. It also used the 21FBP22, which was OK with me.

I repaired an RCA that had a stand like that. It had a CTC16X chassis, but the front bezzel was one from a CTC16E. Great set, for being the BOTL. I remember those sets were priced at $379.00 . The optional stand was made by Gusdorf.

Not a bad price for that time, really. Color was color.
BTW, Sams folder for the CTC 20 showed a model with the same control layout as the CTC16(E) whereas the set above appears to be the CTC16(X) configuration (also the 19" table model CTC19)

So, Dave, you really think that $250 was too much to pay for that set? What would have been a good price?

Seems to me that the seller was correct that the CRT (if it is as good as he says) is easily worth that.

I'm as cheap as they come, though, so I'm more than willing to listen to a good argument for a lower price. I just paid $200 for a brand new in-box 3500 watt gas generator that went for $450 list. :D

That Philco model that was mentioned was $299.00 . The CTC16X was a lot better set.:yes:

That CTC-20 does seem "portable" like the "portable" dishwasher my mother had in the late 1970s. I wonder how many doors that cart will fit through? My house has 30-inch-wide doors.

Today's newspaper had two more Harbor Freight coupon sheets in it; the most I have seen is three sheets in one paper in December shopping season. They are becoming the AOL discs of the 21st century.

I had a friend in my home town whose family had an RCA color set like the one we are discussing (I recognized the control panel). Their set, however, IIRC, was in a large and heavy console cabinet and probably had a stereo record changer plus AM/FM radio.

This particular TV chassis must have been used in several different styles of RCA TVs in the '60s-'70s -- consoles as well as table models, with the former having a separate stereo amplifier chassis through which the TV audio (as well as that from the TT and AM/FM tuner) was routed. Not such a good idea, IMHO, :no: as when the amplifier failed for any reason it not only silenced the stereo audio, but the TV sound as well.

CTC19 is the portable. CTC20 is the same except the flyback and horizontal output is more like the ctc16. The 19 uses a rectangular tube.
Its the budget roundie chassis, filled with 6GH8s.
Kinda rare and worth getting in any case.

When I moved my collection down the hall to a new room the biggest trouble I had were with the roundies. I had to remove the back from the CTC-5 & CTC-11 and then carefully maneuver them through the doorways. My new room has 36" doors on purpose!

That Philco at $299 was a true bargain due to the transistors from the tuner to the 1st video.

A roundie today is worth so much more but $250 is alot IMHO for a newer one, however I do see the point of a good CRT. I have a CTC12A with a worn-down 21FJP22 and a CTC11 with a strong 21FBP22. I had some others that got away due to a cross-country move long ago.

I do remember when these sets were put at the curb and they were free. Now they are few and far between, that's a hard one to accept.
