CTC7 with home made cabinet
 

In California, it really doesn't look too bad for home made.
I'd probably lose the metal decorations on the doors but that's just my opinion.

It says all original parts but the channel selector looks like one from a 4 while the knobs look like a 9 or 10?

Ha! I hadn't seen that 4 before. The 7 really doesn't look too bad and the starting bid is quite fair.

Agreed, though it really wouldn't fit in with any of my decor.

Looks like it may have a Zenith CRT because it's starting to get the green halo.

I'm going to go see it Tuesday I noticed it last week when he put it on eBay... I know the seller, and he has an excellent reputation for quality and correctness in recapping early color sets. I haven't bid, mainly because of lack of room, but I might create some room after I go see it. In general, a non-catalog cabinet is a no-no, but I don't object so much if the cabinet was custom-made when the set was new. Much like a 19-teens or twenties Cadillac often has a custom-built body on it, and is one of a kind, and isn't considered a freak.

He doesn't have a lot of details on the cabinet's origin, but I suspect that it was a freight-damaged set that a cabinetmaker or woodcraft hobbyist bought new as-is, and built at the time.

I'm not so sure the cabinet is that old.
Those are Radio Shack speakers and they don't look any older than the 80's at best.
They have enough dust on them to have been in there a while too.

The seller restored it, so I'm not sure what's his work, and what's unknown/done before. I think he's a member here at AK, so I'm thinking he'll post up in this thread when he gets a chance.

OK, take a closer look at the chassis. CTC7 had two rectifier 5U4's mounted on the transformer. Does this one? No, so it is a later chassis and the knobs on the 7 were on the side, not the front.

Wrong, the late CTC-7 chassis did not have the 5U4s. Furthermore, take a look at the CTC-7 brochures posted on Ed Reitans site to see all the CTC-7 models that had the knobs on the front.

Indeed, my CTC-7C has 5U4's where the later production ones would not. According to my RCA service manual chassis with prefix A through F and the N and P had 5U4's, while the AA-AF and AH/AJ/AK/AL/AM/AN ones had silicon based doublers.

Yeah, I haven't seen one in years and I think I now remember something about that! Why do we know more about these sets today than we did 50 years ago??

The 7 came both ways; transformer-mounted dual 5U4s, or seleniums. Also the cheaper ones had side tuning, and the high end had front tuning.

Seriously though I was mostly joking earlier. Most of what I use the net for is the forums, though I did once learn by accident that if you forget the .org part of this sites name you can end up on a pron site.:eek: I really could not have given a damn about computers or the internet untill a few years back, and did not really start to discover all the many splendid things out there untill my school gave me a laptop (which I probably would not have given a damn about either were it not for some of the places I went to on the family computer when the folks were out). I rarely use the net for studying....I don't want to turn in to one of those human google bars who has to google everything instead of checking the text book first, remembering things, or asking those around him for an explanaton.

Though when one is my age and doesn't have/know how or have confidence to try to get a 3D girl hormones kinda force you to fall back to 2D girls.

I went to see it Wednesday, and honestly, I placed the winning bid because of the quality of the recap on the chassis, and the good CRT (slight Zenith-type cataract on Sylvania tube). The cabinet is built to spectacular standards; all solid laminate hardwood (no thin Masonite on framework, or photo-wood like many original RCA cabinets). I have great appreciation for the workmanship on it, so I wouldn't dream of failing to keep the cabinet in good shape. With that said, I think the chassis would be well-placed in an original cabinet if possible in the future.

I haven't figured out yet where to put it, but it will be in a safe place and well-kept. I have a rather unique GE rebrand front-control CTC-9, which is in nice shape but has a busted CRT and various chassis problems. I might slip the 7 in there, if it can be done withOUT making any permanent mods to the chassis. The only physical mounting difference that I can think of, is that the tuner has an indicator drum and window on the 7, and a regular channel-numbered knob on the GE.

You can likely stick the 9's tuner on the 7's chassis, so it will fit in the cab no problem.
