The set finally got here from Chicagoland this past weekend. I was
suprised to find it in quite good condition. Loaded with dust and
no smoking smell. One module was missing and another had a few
parts missing. I contacted a VK member that has a couple of
drawers(chassis) in the junkbox. They should be on the way soon
providing me with a complete chassis and spare parts.So far, its all
cleaning up well and hopefully will not give too many problems..
Im wondering if anyone has a good idea on how to clean up
all the module mounting connections. (the strips of 5-6 pins that the
modules connect to), I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

On Zenith modules, I've always used 91% isopropyl alcohol and a stiff toothbrush(new of course). There've been times where I used De-Oxit first, then alcohol because the pins were so dingy.

Also, your set is not an early color set but a rectangular, etc. but still VERY worthwhile.

The Chassis have arrived and I have been busy attempting to make
a restoration one one chassis out of the 3 that are here. I was able to
replace the missing modules and do a couple of repairs on them.
The power supply was in great shape, all was cleaned up and reassembled.

The test day arrived and all was reattached together. and powered up
after the set was left on at half voltage for a day. Then there was smoke.
Bothe resistor fuses let loose with a stinky smell. To Make a much longer
story short, both the audio output and vertical output transistors were
bad even though initial test with the simpson looked ok, A lesson learned.
replaced them, repowered and both sound and raster appeared.

much to go, and hopefully with less problems .

Great to see that you have a raster. Those are interesting sets both from a design point, and the way they were advertized to the public as "Works In A Drawer". Too bad more don't show up now, as I'd like to have one to "play" with. Good to see that another is being restored. All the best!!

How dare you post this in the early color television forum. There is no excuse and you should be banned for this careless offense. This forum is for the sacred "early color" TV's only. Everything else is considered junk.

I hope this doesn't mean that you had half the normal AC line voltage applied for a day??? That sounds like a VERY bad idea. To bring it up easily/briefly to see if there are gross shorts might be OK, but the set is not meant to operate in forced brown-out conditions.

Anyway, congrats on first light, and good luck on getting all the way!

Hey! I'm glad that set got a good home. I was just way too busy to pick it up. It also figures that my truck is all fixed now too:rolleyes: I'll get the next one that shows up close.....maybe:D

well, the bad news. the set was an easy restoration, if one likes
to watch the picture on a scope. Nice raster present and good sound.
BUT-no video on the screen. the video signal at the cathode of the
picture tube is present when the socket is unplugged. disappears when
attached. Pix tube tester shows shorted element and will not clear.
anybody got a 25zp22 stashed? or another idea.

Just a tip when trying to rejuvenate crts. Lay the tube down on its face then blast it. The crap will fall and not hit the heater and result in a heater to cathode short.

IIRC the 25ZP22 is a National Video type number. Little wonder you're having trouble with the CRT. If you get that NOS Sylvania CRT, that set should have a great picture.

Things are moving along well. At this point all issues have been resolved
and a nice picture is present. It took 3 chassis to make one fully
operating set. Going over the whys of no video at the cathodes
I finally checked DC (that should have been done first) The DC
was missing. Turned out to be an open winding on the transformer.
Good thing I had a spare. at this point the video was now
on the tube and I had excessive brightness that was partially controlable.
This was an issue of using modules from 3 different chassis, The earlier
video output module used a different bias arrangement to the Pix tube.
Thank goodness for schematics that showed mods. Fixed that and all
is well
Will post some pictures soon. Thanks again to the many VK members
that were helpful. This was much appreciated.

Its Done--pushed in the corner next to the CTC5 and the
properly working Westinghouse 1954 15" color set.
Attached are some pictures of the labors, Thanks again to
the VK'ers who were of appreciated help, they know who
the are. A few pictures are attached of First solid state
rectangular set produced in the US
