Looks like you could do the same thing with him and end up with some silver and maybe gold.

I cant imagine being so poor that I had to resort to this. I think I would rather steal newspaper machines and break the coin boxes open.

I really shouldn't talk as I sent many tvs to recycling while cleaning out a shop.

There's a guy that comes around to get my junk TV's and other junk electronics. He does the exact same thing as this guy; which, is fine with me because he's doing me a service by hauling them off and I don't have to pay to get rid of them. Several years ago, I paid several hundred dollars for a roll-off dumpster so that I could dispose of an excess amount of TV's and other junk. They used to have several dump sites throughout the county for this purpose; but, they are now closed and everything is door-to-door pick-up. Twice a year, the city has a bulky waste collection day. So, if it were not for the scrappers, I'd be screwed.

We have approved recyclers that reuse everything down to the solder. These guys do the same thing here and leave the unwanted toxic waste all over the street.

That was the impression I got too, he didn't seem to concerned with the disposal of the carcass.
Oh well, at least it was a non working, BPC set, you couldn't get $5.00 out of it any other way.

I don't understand why this is really worthwhile. You're spending all that time to tear it apart, separate everything, load it in a truck, use expensive fuel to go to a recycling center, and unload it and wait while they weigh it. Each tv is only worth about 5 bucks according to the comments, but you're probably spending 3 times that in effort and expenses. You'd need to scrap alot of TV sets, and then there are all the carcasses left behind that are essentially toxic waste.

To each their own I guess.

Wow, I can't see how all that effort makes any sense. gotta love the factual sounding commentary, (motor comment is nice). I wonder if any of the wallymart crowd "up grading" to flats are going to want there old BPC back when that flat goes belly up. I was looking at some the other day, I swear they give me a headache if there is any movement on the screen. Seems jarring to me, I think it has to do with how my eyes have been trained to view moving images in 2D, Something about the flats just does not seem natural to me. I guess it could be they are just too sharp, but I honestly think its something else, again the movement gets to me.

I've scrapped dead tube VGA monitors, but I was after the high voltage caps and power resistors and the damper diodes make for good high voltage rectifier diodes in tube hifi audio amps. The bridge rectifiers for their switching power supplies were nice too. And lots of heat sinks. And inductors for higher frequency work. So now I have a pretty well supplied "junk box" of parts. usually it was the horizontal output transistor and flyback that failed to cause the monitor to be junked, but most of the rest of the parts were still fine. But it took me a lot longer to tear down a "chassis" than the guy in the video.

I would like to see her capture a freshly charged CRT anode in the tear down process.

My favorite part is right after the crackhead necks the tube, they talk about some guy who died by impaling himself on a CRT neck.

The economics sure have changed - up until 2008, it was economical to scrap TVs for a living. I have a buddy who still does it. Sony's are his thing - he cruises for them, as they have a higher metal content than most sets. He still picks TVs up for scrap, but he's more into junk cars these days. Seems with the bad economy, folks aren't into having more cars than they need, and he reaps big time from that.

BTW, that Zenith set is worth less than 2 bucks, and the yokes yield little vs the labor to get the copper wire out. For a breakdown of what a Sony XBR would bring to the table, I spelled it out in this thread, post 7:

I junk only my own sets, and don't condone the junking of any rare/esoteric/tube/or otherwise collectible set.

I was going to comment on his stupidity of calling the fly a "motor" but I do believe that they classify that type of scrap as Motors, transformers, etc. So to him, I guess it is a "motor".

What's depressing are the comments of folks who are really interested in doing this themselves, getting that big $5 a tv. How can people be so desperate?

Hm.. problem we have here is they go for the big stuff and steal the copper lines people use to connect propane and oil tanks to the home. Leaves one hell of a mess for the owner to clean up, all for a few bucks. (and can cause thousands in property damage). They can't even be arsed to close the tap.

As others here have pointed out,typically these guys dump the toxic parts in the orange groves or behind kmart when nobody's looking.
Once i watched some mexicans dump a whole load of garbage including a sofa and fiberglass bathtub and tvs in back of a target parking lot and just drive off.

I wonder how much it costs businesses to clean that up?
I know the police will take away your vehicle if they catch you.


How can these guys make any money at this anyway?
If each tv is worth only a couple bucks scrap and you've got to drive all over looking for them,then drive home to scrap them and them drive to get the money and dump the junk parts how are they coming out ahead?

Flat panel TV's have crappy pictures with distortion that makes pics look out of focus and image sizing that is usually wrong. The success of these crappy TV's proves most people are kinda slow at the very least. I just had to say it. I get sooo very irratated when some dumdum friend of mine wants to "show-off" thier new piece of crap.

There is incredible waste and harm from these desperate scrappers. At least we are not as bad as chiny yet.

There was a funny episode of "cops" where a guy had actually tied and entire city street light to his truck to recycle it because it was aluminum!

The worst I have ever personally seen was in Philadelphia: A pair of guys ripping housewiring out of a building that was under demolition. Actually, they were ripping it out of the building AS it was being demolished! A track-hoe was just above their heads knocking the brick wall away from them, while they caught all of that sweet copper that rained down onto them, along with bits of brick, glass, etc.

I think I remember seeing that. What irks me though is that these idiots don't have ANY consideration for anyone. I mean, if you're going to steal $5 worth of copper tubing from someone, at least have the common courtesy to reach 5 inches to your left and close the tank first.

I know if it starts happening in our area, it'd be satisfying to rig up an electric fence line to the copper pipe...

I recall hearing or reading about one they caught because he broke in to a transformer station and tried to steal a copper buss bar...

I wish we had pics of that. I am not surprised. It sure is funnny what a little thing like being hungry for food can do to a man.

Sometimes they don't even wait for that. There was a brand new house a bit away from us that was just being built. They came in, stole all the building supplies, and ripped out all the copper wiring, causing quite a sum in damages.

Part of the problem, of course, is the sleazy scrap dealers that buy from anyone.

Some scrappers here got what they deserved when they tried to steal some live service entrance cable... POW! Dead.

A few weeks ago someone stole about 40 feet of cable off the pole next door. The two houses it serviced are no longer standing. Neither the sheriff's office nor the electric company seemed concerned when I reported it.

Some scrappers actually stole all the cable from about two miles of newly-lit roadway a couple of years ago. How no one saw this happen is beyond me.

One unscrupulous scrapyard was paying bums & addicts to strap a tank & torch to their back and repel down into an old generating plant in town. Just incredible how bad it got in 2006-07. With so many vacant houses back then, they had a field day stealing any cable and copper water pipes from houses. Of course, they'd usually saw them off at the slab - many people had to have PEX run because of the thefts. I was able to chisel out enough slab to sweat on a union in my Mother's kitchen - I was lucky. And let's not talk about air conditioners - people were coming home from work and the whole outside unit & line were gone.

Some place in CA is now leaving the street lights on 24-7 to deter the bums from stealing the wires. I'm sure some will still try, once. A few years ago some guy here in PA tried to steal some overhead catenary wiring from an "unused" electric train siding. The wire was live, he ended up dead.

These videos are about a dime a dozen on youtube. I always laugh.

Last year I grabbed every single TV set off the side of the road I could find. At one time I had at least 150 sets easy. Most of them worked fine and were from the late 90's. I was surprised how much of a market there still was for these old sets. Mostly just broke folks like me or people who wanted the little sets for their children, but selling them for $10 or $20 a pop added up a lot faster than what these fools do.

I'm also lucky, the landfill here accepts them for free and sends them off to be recycled. I used to bring in 5 or 10 at a time and since I came in so often, they'd all know me by name and would set the old stuff to the side that they knew I was more interested in and give it to me. Got a couple 70's console sets that way and one of those old RadioShack Tandy computers too...

A few weeks ago, a friend picked up an '83 19" Zenith off the side of the road to give to me. When I first saw it, the case looked good and the back was fastened with all it's screws. When I picked up the set, I could hear something rattling inside the TV. My first thought was a busted CRT and that a CRT from a junk set would bring the TV back to life. When I pulled the back cover, I discovered that this set should have been left on the side of the road. The CRT was busted, along with every piece of chassis wire, the deflection yoke, the flyback transformer, and any other copper had been stolen. So, that set went on the trash pile. Heck, the thing probably worked before the scrappers got to it.

scrappers drive me crazzy sometimes,they will destory hundreds or even thousands of dollars of useable electronics for 20.00 bucks. at least when i scap something it is scap.

No wonder I see Empty TV cases on the side of the road all the time.. I found a Neat Quasar from the early 80s on the side of the road one night, I hooked it up to the power inverter from the car battery, the set had a beautiful picture, and no sound, It was damp from being left out, and decided to leave it in front of the car parked along the side of the road for the sun to dry it out, and figured no one is going to want this old TV.. When I came out of the house that afternoon, it was gone...

In 2006 I was moving out of a rental and placed two small identical late-70's 12" Zenith B&W sets on the curb, hoping someone would pick them up. One had sound, the other had a picture. I looked out the window and saw two men examining the sets. I thought "good, maybe they can do something with them." A half-hour later, I went to place something else out and saw they were still there, but the electric cords had been cut off! You have to be pretty damn desperate for that little bit of copper.

If I saw two identical Zenith 12" B&W sets at the curb, they would have both been in my car heading home for restoration. I understand the motivation for scavenging in this economy but I can't help thinking we have lost our sense of the value of things. We used to design and build TV sets that became valued household possessions that were cared for and brought pleasure to everyone in the home. Now we can't build a TV and just see it as a few dollars worth of wire. When I restore an old radio or TV I see it as someone's labor that went into assembling it on the line. By restoring it, the time and effort of everyone that contributed to its creation is being preserved. That day's work in the factory sixty years ago still has value because that radio or TV is still in regular use as it was intended in 2012. I know I over sentimentalize these things but in watching the scrapper video all I saw was waste and lack of respect for the technology even though it was a BPC set.
