Was the Sony KV-10FMR20 the only 10-incher?
 

I'm just curious; I recently got the Sony KV-10FMR20 (10" color set with built-in AM-FM & MegaBass boombox) on eBay... I got to thinking I've only ever seen that particular model with a 10" Trinitron tube. It's not a Canadian version of a 9" US model; it's a 10" CRT. It seems funny that Sony would make a special tube to just pump out one model of TV... Anyone seen other sets (or monitors) with that 10" tube?

Perhaps, but the display diagonal is about 1/4" inch smaller than a vintage Sony KV-9000 Trinitron. :scratch2:

What's the CRT prefix? 270? 280? 300? My Sony CRT list is dated 1989, and includes only 9" and 12" CRTs. Must be Uber-rare!

I don't think they're real rare. I have two myself. Build date is Nov. 1989.

Sony made a 5" Trinitron in the late 1980's and I have two of the sets they are in. The "set" they came in was reported to cost about 3K new!!

Why?? It did NOT come in any "TV set" or computer monitor per se...it was used in the Oldsmobile Trofeo VIC computer system as the touch-screen. The actual CRT is a "short neck" Trinitron tube.

I have a car with one I drive every day, and a working, spare VIC unit that cost little.

As a side trivia note... You will sometimes find crazy things in Detroit-area junkyards. I recall a 1985 Buick Rivera with all kinds of GM-prototype markings. Didn't notice anything special until I looked inside and saw the CRT touch screen dash.

Keep in mind, this was the older-style V8 Rivera, not the transverse V6 style as your Trofeo is. :scratch2:

What junkyard was that in? The most exotic thing I saw a couple weeks ago was a Cadillac Cimarron :yuck:

I have one of those Mac Color Classics. Too bad the analog board is shot. There was no result from adjusting H-Stat, and horizontal convergence was wacked out.

I removed 2 zener diodes that looked cooked, and lost them. and cant find out what the originals were to get replacements.

Found it in my Sony ESI collection - looks like the CRT is a 270 mm (10"), CRT number A27KGC10X.

Sony's 1992 dealer net price was 136 dollars for a replacement CRT (no dud needed). Two part numbers with designations "NH" and "SH," apparently different versions for Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

I looked at it last night, but I couldn't see the CRT number through the vent slots. That particular set needs electrolytics. It doesn't always start. That set runs very warm in operation.

The tube is an M27KGC10X. Has the usual orange Trinitron label on it, so this shouldn't be a non-Sony knockoff tube like the one in the last 5" set; the FDT-5BX5. I put a few pics below; the set is sitting with a 12" and a 9" for comparison in one photo.

I pulled the dash monitor out of an '89 Buick Riviera at Pick-A-Part, just out of curiosity (paid $12 for it, if I recall). It was a Zenith monochrome monitor. I don't remember it being a touch-screen, but I don't know. It was definitely monochrome (amber CRT) though.

On the other note, I used to have a Mac with the 10" Trinitron. Put out one heck of a picture too IRC.

On the Oldsmobile Trofeo...the CRT monitor IS a color one--and the tube IS a trinitron, with the touch-plate in front of it, the VIC monitor unit is a LOT bigger and heavier than the Zenith 5" green one you(and I) have lying around, The case says "Sony trinitron" (along with "Denso"), and the tube has the trinitron label--and look--about it. Like the green Riviera monitor--the Desno/Sony one is WAY overbuilt, with a HUGE flyback and heat sinks inside of it--for a 5" color monitor--compared to a normal 5" color set. .

I guess that GM decided to "go one better" when the decided to put a touch-screen computer option on the Trofeo from 89-92, and made it in color and MUCH easier--and more user-friendly--to use. (I have owned 3 of the Riv's over the last 20 years with the green touch-screen, I liked them, but they are NOWHERE NEAR as nice--or as easy to use-- as the color one in my 89 Trofeo is.) GM had even planned for a GPS system on them--but the system was not ready in time(probably due to the shuttle disaster.)

If only the VIC system would have 'caught on " back then--instead of OVER 10 YEARS later .

Now my curiosity is killing me... I saw a Trofeo at the junkyard last week. Not sure of the year, or if it has the touch screen dash... I'm going to go check asap, and I'll harvest that monitor if it's still there :yes:

Took my 10FMR20 apart today. I'm going to change out the 'lytics. It's a nasty little cuss to work on. One of the cabinet sides fell on the concrete floor and shattered like glass. Ordinarilly, you have to beat that BP with a hammer to break it.

How true! I junked a Sharp BPC that was literally fell apart. I hit it gently along the top, above the CRT, and the plastic shattered. Easiest junking I've ever done. My local (literally right behind me) plastics company says that some household cleaners contain chemicals that can mimic the "curing chemistry," causing the plastic to become brittle. That's probably what happened to my Sharp - prior to that, it sat undisturbed for 8+ years as a VCR test monitor.

YES. I've had several sets just disintegrate into shards when I went to pick them up. Particularly Sonys of the 90s. In fact, when I was working at a TV shop several years ago, someone carried in a KV-25XBR (the original 1983 one), and it was sitting on the incoming shelves.... I heard a loud noise, and the weight of the CRT caused the cabinet to just fall in like an abandoned building being imploded :no:

Needless to say, the customer accused us of dropping it.
