Thanks to WISCOJIM I made a nice little haul today including a 1958 Admiral P17E31 portable. It has a metal cabinet with gray hammertone finish. Seems to be in good shape - just a little dirty.
Not the type of set I usually go for, but it was free and is slowly growing on me :yes:

I also picked up a partial Riders set. I think volumes 3-28 were there, but I only took some - just don't have the room for everything.

Maybe the schematic for this set is in one of them ?

DANG!!! I just tossed out the monitor that sits atop that sony camera... and i know it worked... Had it sittin here for years...

Oh well. Do you think the camera will work with a B&W TV ?

It sure will. i had one back in the 80s and i used it on a tv. it will require a LINE IN to feed the video from it.. it should operate at 12 volts..

I found this set in one of the Riders (#24) I just hauled home :)

I can't believe it doesn't have a transformer. It must weight 50+ lbs!

I popped the back off this set and took a look inside. It appears to be in pretty good shape - nothing obviously blown.

This could be why :tears: I see a few cracks in the old coating so I suspect this was a attempt to stop arcing.
I haven't tested it yet. Hopefully, it's still good under all that tape.

Now to test the CRT. I would have used my Sencore CR70, but I'm missing the #4 adapter :(
So I had to drag out my old B&K 440. The emissions came right up into the good range. The life test stinks though - even after an hour of running. Oh well, I'm sure it's good enough to produce a picture.

I had one of those set about 20yrs ago. Good playing little set. A little cramped to work on.

You can use the universal adapter with the Sencore CR70 if you are missing the #4. Unfortunately, most of what I test has to use the universal. Really!!

If the chassis looked like that before any cleaning or blowing out, and with the number of stock tubes that I see, I would say that the set has low hours on it! Is the CRT an Admiral?

The chassis on these portables usually unbolt then tip and remove out the back, unplugging the anode can be a challenge sometimes.

I never pay attention to the life test, if the tube goes up to good with little warm up then it's fine.

The Fly looks a little worrisome though, shouldn't be too hard to find one though.

When i rebuilt my motorolla i actually removed the CRT first with the yoke connected. It had a plug...
then removed the anode to the CRT.. It made removing the chassis alot easier...

OK, I thought that would be the case. I guess it's just a matter of figuring out which CRT pins are filament, grid and cathode.

That's what I was thinking too. Other than the flyback, it's very clean inside. Yes, it's an Admiral CRT and very likely the original.


BTW I finished sorting through all those loose tubes. No hidden treasures, but I did find a bunch of good 5U4s and 6SN7s.

I think I see a few large pin tubes in there. Is that a brass base short pin globe style oldie over at the left? That may be from the very early twenties. Even if a dud it's of interest to collectors.

That TV has a live chassis. How do they have that isolated from the metal cabinet?

The large tubes are ham type tubes like 836 and 866. Yes, it's a brass based 01A. The filament is ok but the grid leak is broken inside.

One side of the AC goes right to the chassis ground. The cabinet ground is connected to that via a 1 M resistor and a 0.0047 1.5 kV capacitor. I assume to bleed away any charge that might accumulate.

The flyback is Admiral# 79D 77-4. That's a FLY-137 I believe.

Remove the front safety glass bezel and the screws from the cabinet wrap-around on the bottom. The CRT and the chassis are all in one mounted on a frame.
