'65 Arvin (Matsushita)
 

Here's a neat little Arvin 65K38 portable made in Japan by Matsushita.

The fine tune control turns a toothed belt hooked to the tuner shaft:

She works well after sitting for 30+ years - tuner is dirty and it'll get the paper & wax caps replaced (of course.) I'd never seen an Arvin set of any age, and am glad to have found this interesting little guy.

I had that same one when I was younger, pulled it from the trash.

I wonder if the reason Japan sets had the wire tube hold downs was to keep the tubes in during overseas shipping

I see those gray tube caps, mostly will check bad.

Those sets had those oddball 300ma. series tubes. I wonder if it has a voltage doubler power supply. I worked on one that was a Pencrest.

Those look like the ones in a Sansui 1000A I'm currently working on for a pal on AK. Sure enough, a couple of them had blown up.

Ditto on the grey caps, they like to spray oil all over, get 'em out of there and she'll be a great set. I like the looks of it, you did a great job cleaning it up:yes:

I thought they may have been there because it was a portable. :scratch2:

Even the table top sets have them.

How did the crt test in this one?

Didn't test it, but it made a full raster about 1/2 as bright as a new tube. I only ran it for about 60 seconds. Doubt it's been powered up in 35+ years - it couldn't have been more than 5-10 years old when it was shelved. I'm sure it will wake up some more.

Those grey caps are nasty things :yes: It sure looks crammed in there! Interesting looking Japanese set though. Have never seen any tubed jap sets in my neck of the woods, only solid state ones.

I have a few 60s radios that had those caps and every single one was 100% open. These are multi band radios that have about 15 of those gray caps and they were bad to the point the radio was silent.

I have a 1965 Curtis Mathis B&W console that had those grey caps. I guess the chassis was from Japan. I replaced them and had the set working. However, it is not been played in a few years as it is on loan to the Bob Bullock Texas State History museum. Curtis Mathis was the only TV brand made in Texas(at least at some point). I have some later model Curtis Mathis metal sets(color) and they are 100% Japanese.

Interesting find...i'm big on the 'oddball' sets that don't come up that often.

It must run very hot...kinda packed in there.

I appreciate the tipoff on the gray oil caps - I figured on changing those out anyhow.

I love the oddball stuff too. I'd rather have this kind of stuff than a Predicta or CTC-5 etc. Nobody bothered to save these years ago and you rarely see them anymore.
