XL100 Curbside Find
 

Im not normal into solid state but this thing is Cool and I cant turn my back on a US made set. It has a bright clear picture.
It looks like it had been sitting out through a few good rain storms so I let it bake in the car for a few days to dry out.
CTC97 What problems did these have?

Wow if she was exposed to rain and still works,thats a treasure there!!

That's getting close to the set leadlike has been searching for.

I have some old RCA remotes; does anyone know what it's supposed to look like?

The connections between tuner and control module are often bad....To fix resolder the stakes that are soldered to one module and plug into the other module. I don't remember which one is male and which is female but you'll know when you look at it.
I think this is one of the sets that had a bad audio coil...Mushy audio that might buzz too. Retuning the slug wont fix it either. I think the coil form changes as it ages and kills the coil Q. It's the one in the can in front of the delay line

The remote should be a half-round unit about 8 inches long. I've seen both black and silver. It's ultrasonic so there is a little transducer grill on the shooting end of it. 4 buttons

Oh god...that IS my set! Too bad it is 3,000 miles away. Well, at least now I know what THE set is.

This thing is low hours and the crt is STRONG. Its not even close to trash.

Those sets had a heck of a nice picture. I had a 19" CTC97 with a rotary tuner that we used in the living room until my Mother got ready for a bigger set.

I too used a CTC-97 for a long time. Still got it somewhere I think. Great pic's on that set.

The one on the right-I remember the vol. up/on button being blue like that. It's so cool seeing this stuff again....I haven't seen that remote in at least twenty years, but I wouldn't forget an old friend like that.

The one on the left appears to be some sort of chromed plastic? If it is, then it isn't a match.

These two are identical, I just put one upside down. Maybe the one you remember was all black? I know about what to look for now, anyway. Could be some more like these buried.

I bet thats it. On the set pushing both vol up and own turn it on then turning the volume all the way down and then some shuts it off. Kinda like the space command remote.

I dont really trip on remotes to deep anymore now that I am forced to use this digital converter box crap. I guess it would be nice have for collection sake

Yeah, the remote I remember was all black, so I guess while the faceplate is identical, the cradle is a little different with having that plastic chrome treatment. Very close, though.

Leadlike, did you ever determine the year of manufacture?. here are a few images of my 70's RCA XL 100. It was a hand me down when my parents upgraded probably in the 90's, it has a remarkable clear pic and bright brilliant color. It now serves duty as my shop area (work bench) TV. CC

The CTC97 is a very nice set. I ran mine into the ground. Had the two button ultrasonic remote control. It needed filter caps but otherwise very strong performer. It eventually developed a bad delay line in the color circuitry and I couldn't find one that matched up correctly.

I like how such a late set still uses an octal plug and socket to connect the yoke to the chassis. Even when this tv was made it was already a 40+ year old connector.

Seeing the set discussed here reminded me there's an XL-100, don't know the model, knob-tuned set in the Antique Depot in Annville PA. (no connection.) Don't know the functional condition of it but they are asking $55 but it's been sitting there a LONG time. Cellphone photos I took today.

Probably a CTC71 delta gun set from around '74. Those upright chassis sets are the best sets that RCA made and they produce an amazing picture when working right.

I have some Mural TV sets which are just like the last ones shown here. These always seem to have good CRT's. I have seen more weak CRT's with the early 80's RCA inline sets like the first set mentioned here.

Flybacks, 18 ohm resistor for a vertical problem and sound chip would be common problems for this chassis.

i have one of those 19 inch xl100s.mine is as plain as it gets.no afc or acm controls,no woodgrain,etc.the picture is amazing!was given to me as a non working set.plugged and played.since no remote,they didnt know how to turn it on.i will post pics later.those upright xl100s were tremendous sets and although we all preferred the zeniths and sylvanias back then,i have found a new appreciation for rca.my 19 and 25 inch xl100s produce as good a picture as i ve seen.

I agree. My RCA CTC-185 19" color set, now in storage since I bought a flat panel last August, had a great picture, but I think my new Insignia (rebadged Sylvania) FP has a much better picture since it is all digital. Don't know about RCA/Thomson FPs, but I'd think they would have better picture quality than even the best NTSC CRT sets, again since FPs are 100 percent digital, as are all TV signals these days -- including, eventually, translators and low-power stations.

Have you tried your XL-100 TVs on digital cable? I think this type of cable service is far superior to the older analog systems; better signal quality, more channels and so on. I don't know what is in the Columbus area as far as cable TV service goes, but I think the area must have at least one all-digital cable system.

i have my xl100 25 inch hooked up to direct tv.the picture is amazing.the 19 inch is on a digital converter in the garage.it is just as good.reds that are red instead of orange.plain set that really delivers a sharp picture.convergence is nearly perfect and all i had to do was adjust guns.contrast is at minimum and still nice and bright.

very nice. I get a lot of comments on my old vintage set, people are shocked at how good they look. That XL100 looks nice.

I had an RCA set that looked a lot like that, CTC62 IIRC. It used plug in modules in a vertical chassis. The CRT went dead and we tossed it.

Mine is a 1974 as you can see. The first one listed I believe is circa 1983.

Aren't those the sets that deguass when you turn it off? That feature always stuck me as strange.

I realize this is a 2 year old thread, and I wish I would have known about this forum then because maybe I could have picked this set up. This is one of the sets I have been searching for probably the better part of 10 years. They were great sets and one I would like to find mainly because its what I grew up watching. Anyone know the model number? Having at least a model number may help me find one some day.

Being the odd one out as usual, I'm game for an XL-100 discussion, no matter how old the topic. That's the same sort of selection criteria I have for my own sets. This one would have been one of the oldest fairly-common sets from my youth though. I recall an old dial-tuned Quasar table-top set owned by a friend's mom.

Unfortunately, if you're mainly into solid-state chassis sets any newer than the early Zenith flat chassis sets, you'll be relegated to the sidelines here.

Yeah, the one we had was repaired a couple of times. Had an uncle who worked for RCA as a repair tech so he always did the repairs. It was watched daily for 20 years before my parents finally gave it to my uncle who repaired it again and then he used it for video games in his basement for another 5 or so years and the picture still was better than some of the new sets today. Maybe one day I will find one, but I know with every year that passes the odds decrease.
