A philco compact 19. I'm guessing by his description that the set has a raster only condition, but is still a unique all metal portable. Someone should rescue it

This is the problem w/TV collecting-How do you get such a set from Point "A"-Little Hocking, Ohio (Oh Dear God-what a name...) to Point "B" Rogersville, TN, w/a reasonable certainty of it arriving intact, along w/shipping costs that won't break up Jay Gould ?

I just put a bid in on it. I'm moving into an apartment and I need a set to take with me.

The treatment of the CRT looks very European, which gives an unique appearance.

The set is not really a portable unless it has a carrying handle on top or on the sides; it is more likely considered to be a table model. At 59lbs it is also likely to have a transformer power supply and parallel heaters.

"Rare", well, diamonds are rare but thanks to jewelry and record needles and saw blades, well, they are all over the place. This Philco is a lot less common than that-but probably not worth much more than a record needle! It does have a "crisp" design. I have a Philco table model that might be just a bit older than this (uses a seperate safety glass) It's a series-string set, and a particulary cheap one at that. I've found that a 12" shelf running around the perimeter of the TV room will hold a nice lineup of these "suitcase" portables.

I won it! I've been looking for another restoration project for the winter.

An interesting "cross" of two sets I know.
The cabinet style and weight remind of of the GE M4 (21T2425) I grew up with.
The "European style" cover glass the same size and shape of the CRT front are in my Motorola 21T34BA which has an AGC problem I'm still trying to troubleshoot (a post about this problem is still in the forum somewhere).

The set came in the mail today. Everything else is in decent shape, the chassis is in good condition with HV and sound, but the CRT filaments are open. This set is in too nice shape to just part out and toss, so now it looks like I'll need a CRT.

I'm looking for a 19abp4 or its equivalent. If anyone has one, please let me know.

to my surprise, this is a very well built set, WITH a power transformer, shielded IF cage, and 6.3v parallel wired tube filaments.

I was just talking with someone who has a 19AJP4. Have to check the sub book...

You might want to contact Bob Castiglione, 518-332-1514. I have a list of his tubes and it contains several 19 inch B&W ones. I do not see the one mentioned, but he may have a substitute.

Bad news: I checked several sub books and they all say that there are no subs for that one. Not sure why not? The Rider book in particular is pretty good about listing things that can be made to work but it just has a footnote stating there are no subs.

Fingers crossed and prayers sent that you can find a workable substitute or at least a good work-around for that tube. It sure DOES seem like too nice a set to scrap! :no:

Biggest problem I see is that the tube as a 2.6v heater. Pretty odd as CRT's go.

There are easy work-arounds for the 2 volt heater. Do you have the chassis or model number?

The set's chassis number is 11n51.
It apparently shares a chassis with a member of the Predicta family, the Siesta model from 1959.
The set does have a filament transformer. No series string here.

The correct CRT is available. That's good news.

If that does not work out, you can light a 6 volt tube by moving the filament connection from the 2.7 volt tap to the 6.3 volt tap on the power transformer. The transformer will handle it. Earlier versions did not have the tap and powered the CRT from the 6 volt tap through a dropping resistor.
