Rocky Horror Picture Show Remake?!

I was in the 8th Street Playhouse (NYC) Cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for many years. I was on the alumni board today and it was abuzz with antici---------------------pation over this article.
Now there's been buzz about this for years, but this is the closest I've seen to reality on this. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Heresy (and I don't mean Klipsch)?

onepixel 08-13-2008 03:01 PM

Meatloaf... again!

Andyman 08-13-2008 03:08 PM

I think it's a classic and should be left alone. Name me one classic remake that betters the original???

My money says it will probably blow....

slow_jazz 08-13-2008 03:59 PM

Movies this classic should never be touched.... Let's Do the Time Warp Again...

D*! Janet!!!!

ozmoid 08-13-2008 04:03 PM

Madness... takes control. :smoke:

cornhulio 08-13-2008 04:33 PM

Dammit Janet I would vote no. I have the album which will make some good listening one of these days.

mhardy6647 08-13-2008 04:48 PM

I am with Andyman.

What's next? A Plan Nine from Outer Space remake?
Glen or Glenda?

Jeepers, all of what makes Rocky Horror great is what it is; who's in it. It is as kitsch-y and campy as can be; very much of its era. A remake woud run the very real risk of taking the task too seriously, maybe even if the creator/writer of the original play, Richard O'Brien ("Riff Raff") were involved in the project.

I'd say if they cap the budget at, say, $2 million, shoot on 16 mm film, and get John Waters involved... maybe. maybe...

thisOne 08-13-2008 05:07 PM

Why???

What's wrong with the ORIGINAL??? (other than maybe Meatloaf)

Is there going to be someone better than Tim Curry

Like I said

WHY???

tboat4 08-13-2008 06:19 PM

No! NO! NO!

Remake "The Wizard of Oz", Gone With The Wind, West Side Story? You've got to be kidding. How could anyone possibly expect that a remake would be a good idea? Some movies are best just left as they were originally released. Another example of trying to capitalize on a name. I predict a box office bust.

John Carpenter's..."The Thing"...

You don't watch much TV, eh........

Actually, who would go see it? The old timers would boycott it as soulless Hollywood money grubbing, and the idiots who eat up most of the drivel spewed forth these days would probably find it not their cup of Starbucks.

FWIW, the remake of "The Producers" grossed $38M worldwide and cost $45M to make....

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Remake 1 of the greatest movies ever made?!?

It's just a step to the left....

Sandy G 08-13-2008 07:38 PM

NO ! Well, shit, while we're at it let's remake Gone With The Wind, too...or that OTHER 1939 turkey, Wizard of Oz...Lawrence of Arabia-I'm SURE that POS could be topped...A Man For All Seasons-Get me Rewrite ! Does anyone in Hollywood think w/anything other than their wallet or genitals ?!?

djv8ga 08-13-2008 08:03 PM

My wife's favorite movie of all time. I bet she won't like the idea.

Toasted Almond 08-13-2008 08:17 PM

Where you gonna find a slender girl with a rack like young Sarandon's?

"I'm a wild and untamed thing, a bee with a deadly sting...."

The re-make of The Thing from Outer Space was okay, but pales compared to the original. No special-effects is a good thing a lot of times.

It's just a jump to the left...
And then a step to the right...
With your hands on your hips...
You bend your knees in tight...
But it's the pelvic thrust....
that really drives you insane...
Let's do the TIME WARP again!

Yours truly in the 8th Street Playhouse cast ca. 1985

fender23 08-13-2008 08:57 PM

In a word.........NO

I spent many a Friday night at midnight in college with an opened umbrella, toast and other items being a 20-something dumbass along with countless others at the local theater. Why, part of my youth would be stolen. And honestly, could anyone be hotter than Sarandon in her bra and panties? Scandalous for the time.

Sandy G 08-13-2008 09:15 PM

And WHO would they get to play the Narrator ? (Where's Yer F!ckin' Neck ?!?) Or Brad ? Or Riff Raff ? Yeah, Sarandon was an UBER-BABE in those days, wasn't she ?

2DualsNotEnough 08-13-2008 09:16 PM

Ive seen the original many times, but to be honest,it really tried too hard to be campy and outrageous. It was made by a major studio and it feels akin to your parents trying to be hip.Tim Curry made the movie.I think everyone else could be recast without too much of a problem.Tim Curry,though.....Does Eddie Izzard sing?

I dunno, Jennife Love Hugetits?

Toasted Almond 08-15-2008 04:59 PM

Not a chance. She doesn't even come close to having that wide-eyed "Bang me!" look that Sarandon had back then. ESPECIALLY in that movie.

I'm not so sure they're gonna "pull this off" anymore. Look at this.

Ironically, the Wizard of Oz was itself a remake- it had first been made in the silent film era. But I agree with you. Hollywood is lazy and a remakes are low-risk ventures.

Of all movies, I cannot imagine a remake of Rocky Horror flying at all.

Urchinn 08-25-2008 03:06 PM

Wow, you guys/gals are freakin' old geezers or something! Does a re-make somehow erase your original vhs/laserdisc/dvds of the original version. Nobody is gonna force you to see it. Besides, there are seriously about 32 cast versions of this floating around (at least three feature Tim Curry)! Good songs are timeless. You are suggesting that since Lena Horne sang "Just One of Those Things" nobody else should touch it (what movie was that?)? By the way, the remake of Wizard of Oz is, in fact, better that the five silent versions. John Carpenter's remake of The Thing is pretty fantastic. Martin Scorcese's remake of Internal Affairs (The Departed") is quite good, et cetera. Hey, give a new generation to love the Rocky Horror songs and you can bet that sales of the original version will rise.

Toasted Almond 08-25-2008 08:16 PM

I hope you're not suggesting we abandon being grumpy, unyielding, and intolerant of change. That's gonna flop a lot worse than a Rocky Horror re-make.

Andyman 08-25-2008 08:23 PM

Oh, I dunno about intolerant of change, especially the way some guys here swap gear around.
Maybe intolerant of BAD IDEAS......

Let's remake "Gone with the Wind" too with Olin Wilson, Ben Stiller, and Jessica Simpson too while we are at it.....

stereodctr 08-25-2008 09:12 PM

No to a remake, this is one classic that should be left alone.

Jack Lord 08-26-2008 11:40 AM

I have always thought they should remake bad movies.

Case in point: St Elmo's Fire. Great idea/premise for a movie, but over the top and frequently absurd. Remake it I say.

I was just thinking of that.

I don't usually like remakes or even colorized stuff. (Ted Turner should burn in hell for colorizing all the old B&W films and TV shows.)

The remake of 'The Producers' had some good moments, and the actors were good, but it can't replace the original. I'm glad I saw it, but I doubt I'll watch it again, unlike the original that I've watched a number of times.

Ditto for the Pink Panther films.

I suspect that a remake of Rocky Horror would never capture the charm of the original. There are some things you just can't reproduce.

I always think of a movie that was a favorite at my High School. We had noon movies where they showed 16mm films. Everyone's favorite was "Night of the Living Dead."

It was creepier in B&W than almost any horror movie I've seen since in color.

It's also another example of a movie that didn't need to be remade (twice!).

mfhale 08-26-2008 01:10 PM

Why not? I won't see it and it probably won't be any good, but the original wasn't that great either.

Don't get me wrong, I have many fond (if fuzzy) memories of Tim Curry and company camping it up at the midnight movies. I suspect, however, that the nostalgia of the experience is what most of us pine for...it certainly isn't for the epic cinematic art of the film.

Besides, what do I care if a bunch of Hollywood-types take it in the pants on yet another bomb? Just my $0.02.

I actually watched it on TV within the last 6 months or so. My wife and I sat there and sang along. "It's just a jump to the left..." :D

It's just a really fun movie.
