Stopped and took these pictures on the way to work this morning. This stuff has been piled up in front of this house for over a month.

That portable RCA in the background has Doug's name written all over it!
It has the black back on it and looks like maybe one of the CTC 19 or 27'S he has been looking for!

RuSsMaN 04-14-2004 05:04 PM

Did you at least yank some tubes, if there were any?

Cheers,
Russ

Vintage TX 04-14-2004 05:24 PM

Did you grab everything Ward?:D

Celt 04-14-2004 05:52 PM

Ew! Watch out for rats! :puke:

drh4683 04-14-2004 06:06 PM

ward,

Please grab that ctc19! Its the set in the last picture sitting face down with the woodgrain metal cabinet and black back metal cover! Those are hard to find, and I must have one! I'll pay shipping!
Thanks-Doug

Well I guess one man's trash is another man's treasure. Not sure if the serial number tells you anything, but here it is:

Here is the inside. sure you don't just want me to salvage parts for you. This little tike is heavy.

Carmine 04-14-2004 08:58 PM

WTF? These sets don't have a deflection yoke?

rca2000 04-14-2004 09:20 PM

What is going on here?

What is it with these sets having no yokes? Does someone actually think that the small amount of copper in them is worth destroying a nice tube yoke for?

polaraman 04-14-2004 09:26 PM

You got it! The guy I got my recent sets from took all the yokes to the scrap man for money. A real shame! Hello! RCA 2000!

polaraman

drh4683 04-14-2004 11:51 PM

That set you picked up is the "adair" from 1966, should have something like a ctc19a in it. No big deal that the yoke is gone, ive got parts for those, including a yoke! If you could take a pic of the front of the set id appriciate it. Inside looks pretty decent considering how long it was outside with the back facing up!
Id really be interested in restoring that set. That chassis series is very tough to find and are my favorites (the ctc19+ctc27). Just curious how good the front looks. Thanks for picking it up!

Polaraman, your set looks like a ctc53. It also looks like a ctc55, however you can tell the difference by the sound module sockets. If there are two independent sockets its a ctc55, if the module plugs into just one socket its a ctc53. I think that set is a 72, possibly 73.

Wardsweb 04-15-2004 07:46 AM

I will shoot some pics this evening after work. The paint is coming off the top of the aluminum bezel above the picture tube and it's missing the center piece of the channel changing knob. The outer knob ring is there, along with the two smaller knobs below.

captainmoody 04-15-2004 07:51 AM

Too bad the scrappers got to those yokes. That is a BIG problem here also.
If you don't grab the tv quickly nowadays stuff turns up missing!
With scrap being at an all time high due to China's insatiable industrial demand we will be seeing a lot of that.
Heck, If a house stays empty too long around here the fools will strip all the copper plumbing and wiring out of it!

andy 04-15-2004 03:53 PM

Good luck with that RCA. There's something very satisfying about restoring a set that's been given up for dead by any rational person.

Doug, I have a wooden floor model CTC19 cabinet you can have for cost of shipping. No tube or other electronics though. Maybe you can put that tube and chassis in it.

What chassis RCA is this? I have this as well as a white cased one. The white cased one has cataracts, but otherwise is in good condition. These are free if some one wants them, I am in central Texas.

andy 04-16-2004 12:04 AM

I'd take one, but I'm on the other side of the country. I had the console version of this when I was a kid and wouldn't mind one again (only the table top version to save space). I remember it having a surprisingly good picture for a then 25 year old curb side pick up.

Chad Hauris 04-16-2004 06:19 AM

peverett, where are you in Texas? I am near Odessa. I might be interested in the set if you're not too far away.

polaraman 04-16-2004 06:31 AM

Chad,

I sent you a PM about the CRT in that Truetone. Do you know the CRT number? I may have found another to help you out. I have ties to Texas and can get it back there. PEVERETT is near Austin.

Small world, I'm in San Antonio http://wardsweb.org/ebay/Texas_flag.gif

captainmoody 04-16-2004 10:48 AM

peverett, I would be interested in the white cabinet rca if you still have it.

jasonlava 04-16-2004 11:06 AM

1974 or 5 RCA?

Does anyone have a 74'or5 (?) RCA console?

I remember it had a toggle switch on the top for on/off and you swung out a bottom door for the picture adjustments. My grandparents had a console with dual speakers. I wound up inheriting it and had it installed in my bedroom so I could play my Atari games on it. It was a fine TV with a good picture until something electronic went out and they scrapped it. :(

ON the good side, it ran until about 1988 when it died and I got a 20" RCA square picture TV which had an EXCELLENT pic. Probably the best pic I've seen yet on a regular CRT television.

captainmoody 04-16-2004 11:11 AM

If you could get me some pics of what you are looking for (cabinet style) I am sure that I can locate one for you for free.

I don't know. :dunno: There's no accounting for what some people will do with a TV set (or anything else) they find in a trash pile. I mentioned in another thread a few days ago how kids often destroy CRTs in discarded sets by throwing rocks at the screen or knocking the neck off, even though the tube itself might have been perfectly good. The same sort of thing could be happening with these TVs that are missing the yokes. Someone, as you just mentioned, may have figured they could get something for the wire in the windings although, as you also said, it wouldn't be much. I once found a 23" Zenith console in a neighbor's trash in my hometown that was missing all its tubes, except the CRT and HV rectifier. I've wondered since then whether the original owner kept the tubes for another set or a junk box, etc. or if some electronics bug in the neighborhood took the tubes for use in another application.

BTW, jasonlava mentioned in another post having had a 20" RCA square-corner TV in the late '80s that produced an excellent picture, "better than any other CRT television" he had seen to date. That was characteristic of all RCAs before Thomson took over the company in the early '90s. However, I have a 1999 RCA CTC185A7 with a dark-tint tube that makes a very good picture on cable, much better than many of the earlier sets I've seen with delta-gun tubes, shadow masks, and gray or green faceplates.

Someone mentioned in a thread here some time ago that the quality of RCA color CRTs actually improved when Thomson bought out RCA; if so, I believe it. My set was purchased new over four years ago and still has the original CRT, no problems with it (the CRT) whatsoever (shorts, etc.) in all that time. In fact, someone else said in a post to another thread awhile ago that the failure mode of most RCA CRTs is shorts; if the tube goes for several years without shorting, it will last quite a while. If that doesn't speak volumes for how RCA's CRTs have improved since the late 1980s, I don't know what does. Now, if they would only resolve those pesky on-board tuner issues . . .

Chad Hauris 04-16-2004 01:29 PM

Yes, I have one of those type RCA consoles but it is at my parents' house. There is a large flip-up and down switch for power at the top and the control panel is fairly narrow, consisting of all the controls in a row when you pull it out. I think it is a ctc-48. CRT is weak, the instant-on feature on the CRT probably did not help it.

Well :( for the CRT. Mine had a nice bright clear pic, but I guess it would have to go sooner or later. But I would like to find another one with a good crt and run some 70s cartoons on it :D . boy would that bring back memories of Saturday mornings in the 70s.

Of course, now my favorite is the Toshiba flat-tube TVs. Those have an excellent pic.

andy 04-16-2004 05:57 PM

Thomson did finally fix the onboard tuner problems by reverting to using a regular seperate tuner. All the most recent Thomson made sets I've seen have had a seperate tuner. It only took them about 6 years to figure it out.

peverett 04-16-2004 07:16 PM

I am northwest of Buda, Texas. This town is just south of Austin. If any one would like to come by to look at the TVs I have, the weekend of the 24th is clear. Others can be arranged also. Just send me a private email.

Captinmoody, I notice that you are quite a ways off. Do you recommend a way that I can get the TV to you, these are quite heavy.

Andy, I sent you a private email on another matter per recommedation of Polaraman. Did you see it?

captainmoody 04-16-2004 07:38 PM

I can make a custom foam lined shipping container that fits the RCA exactly and is shippable through fedex/ups.
Am doing so for Doug this weekend.

drh4683 04-16-2004 10:47 PM

Ward,

That box that captianmoody is making is specially designed to fit that style of rca tv. I was talking to him earlier about it. Basically what is going to happen is that captian is going to send the box down to prevrett and when captain gets the box back he will send it to you, the you can box it up and send it along to me. Like i said, Ive got lots of parts for those and will make that set look and work like new!
Thanks-Doug

Wardsweb 04-16-2004 11:28 PM

Excellent ! I take it the pictures told you what you wanted to know. I will keep it in the garage until it's time to ship it. FYI. as operations manager for my company, all shipping and receiving fall under my command. I have access to pretty much anything you would like. So from FedEx and UPS to truck freight and Forward Air I can ship most any way you would prefer.
