Movies Chock Full of Great Lines
I'll nominate Casablanca. Even though I find Rick and Ilsa not believable.
Senor Ferrari: As the leader of all illegal activities in Casablanca I am an influential and respected man... Woman: What makes saloon keepers so snobby? Banker: Perhaps if I told him I ran the second largest banking house in Amsterdam. Carl: Second largest? That wouldn't impress Rick. The leading banker in Amsterdam is the new pastry chef in our kitchen. Banker: .. We have something to look forward to.. Aninna: Monsier Rick, what kind of a man is Captain Renault? Rick: Oh, he's just like any other man only more so. Really thats just the tip of the iceberg with this movie. Any others? |
Monty Python - The Life of Brian
Office Space Pulp Fiction Swingers The Big Lebowski |
I second Office Space and The Big Lebowski.
|
The Blues Brothers.
:) Matt |
Blazing Saddles :D
"Casablanca" certainly is one of the tops, and "Pulp Fiction" is right up there too. Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money] Croupier: Your winnings, sir. |
(this is from memory, but it's close)
I came to Casablanca for the water[s] But monsieur, Casablanca is in the desert I was misinformed |
Animal House & Caddyshack
"was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" "I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them" |
Captain Renalt; What in heavens name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters. Captain Renalt: The waters? What water we're in a desert. Rick: ...I was misinformed.. There is a site maybe someone can link IMDB that displays dialogue in movies. (Internet Movie Data Base) |
Dr. Strangelove is brimming with great writing (Terry Southern)... not just the writing. One of my very favoritest; we've discussed it at great length here before.
The whole screenplay is available online. http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/0055.html |
You have to mention The Godfather.
"Leave the gun, take the Cannoli" Go the the mattresses "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse" Really, with a working knowledge of Casablanca and The Godfather, you know everything you need to know about American culture..... |
"I'm here to chew some bubble-gum and kick some ass. And I'm all out of bubble-gum."
I'd be impressed if anyone can guess the movie. :) Matt |

FWIW I knew that one, just didn't check in before Newman. Another movie with some great lines is The Fifth Element. One of my favorites. Ray |
Preparations A through G were abysmal failures and so now I present Preparation H.
There's no fighting in here, this is the War Room! |
"The Odd Couple"
Oscar: "We have green sandwiches and brown sandwiches." Murray: "What are the green sandwiches?" Oscar: "Either very young cheese or very old meat." Murray: "I'll take a brown one." "The Producers" Bialistock: "Shut up, I'm having a rhetorical conversation!" Bialistock: "You know who I used to be? Max Bialistock, king of Broadway, three shows running at once. And look at me now, Bloom, look at me now! I'm wearing a cardboard belt!" Bialistock, looking at a woman getting out of a limousine: "That's it, baby, when you've got it, flaunt it, flaunt it!" |
I'm a huge "Strangelove" fan. (See my avatar). I spent much of my young adult years serving in the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Trust me, that flick is closer to the truth than you can imagine. Another classic script resides in "Cool Hand Luke", for example "What we have here is a failure to communicate."
|
They Live it is.
You guys are the best. :) Matt |
Sunset Boulevard
|
Another from "The Producers" (this is the original movie I'm talking about here.)
Bialystock: "You have exactly three seconds to replace that look of disgusting pity with one of enormous respect. 1...2.......do the books, do the books." |
I'm unna go low brow here
Flying High (was it called Airplane for origonal release in the States) You're needed in the cockpit what is it? O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Anything by the Cohen brothers) |
Franz Liebkind: I am the author. You are the audience. I outrank you!
-The Producers |
Gross Pointe Blank
|
Apocalypse Now - with Colonel Kilgore. He had several good lines. I love the smell of napalm in the morning... and many others..

If you have kids, you might remember these:
Hairball, major hairball. We're gonna be falcon poop. and many more I can't remember |
Goodfellas
Stacks Edwards: What time is it? Tommy DeVito: It's eleven thirty, we're supposed to be there by nine. Stacks Edwards: Be ready in a minute. Tommy DeVito: Yeah, you were always fuckin' late, you were late for your own fuckin' funeral. [shoots him] |
Blazing Saddles - darn near any absurd occurrence in business has a metaphor in that movie.
|
Then there' the Marx Brothers movies.
Duck Soup: Chicolini: Monday we watch Firefly’s house, but he no come out. He wasn’t home. Tuesday we go to the ball game, but he fool us. He no show up. Wednesday he go to the ball game, and we fool him. We no show up. Thursday was a double header. Nobody show up. Friday there was no ball game so we stayed home and we listened to it over the radio. Trentino (exasperated) Then you didn’t shadow Firefly? Chicolini:Oh, sure we shadow Firefly. We shadow him all day. Trentino But what day was that? Chicolini Shadderday. |
Major T.J. Kong(Slim Pickens): Well I've been to a worlds fair, a picnic, and a rodeo and thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard come out of a set of earphones. You sure you got todays code?
-Dr. Strangelove |
"P*ss on you, I'm working for Mel Brooks"
Taggart (Slim Pickens) "Blazing Saddles" |
Good Fellas!
|
" AM I A CLOWN Am I HERE TO AMUSE YOU?"-GOOD FELLAS
|
Airplane has many classic lines throughout the movie.
Monty Python's Holy Grail is another movie that is often repeated in the circles I run with. Yet, dare I mention Sixteen Candles as a source for good one liners. Especially from Long Duck Wong..." I thought you were my new American style girlfriend"... |
A few of the better lines...
Lions and tigers and bears! Oh, my! Frightened? Child, you're talking to a man who's laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom, and chuckled at catastrophe... I was petrified. Put 'em up, put 'em up! Which one of you first? I can fight you both together if you want. I can fight you with one paw tied behind my back. I can fight you standing on one foot. I can fight you with my eyes closed. Oh, pull an axe on me, eh? Sneaking up on me, eh? Why, I'll... Ruff! And now, my beauties, something with poison in it, I think. Something with poison in it, but attractive to the eye, and soothing to the smell. Poppies... Poppies. Poppies will put them to sleep. Sleep. Now they'll sleep! OH.. and OK.. another little exchange that I always laugh at... Auntie Em: I saw you tinkering with that contraption, Hickory. Now you and Hunk get back to that wagon. Hickory: All right, Mrs. Gale. But someday, they're going to erect a statue to me in this town Auntie Em: Well, don't start posing for it now. |
Mush is a degenerate Gambler ,they call him mush because everything he touches turns to mush,,,when he goes to the race track they give his tickets allready torn-up
