Scariest Comedy ever Made -
 

I'll admit to being a little biased since my father, Sterling Hayden was in the movie, but stands as the best dark comedy made in the history of film - in my opinion. The movie ? Dr. Strangelove of course. Not only is it timeless in it's serious content, but the humor is frightning because you can imagine our leaders actually saying and doing the things in the movie! My father plays Jack Ripper who proudly starts World War III.

If you have not seen it since it was released in 1964......see it, you'll laugh and then want to cry-

Wow, your Dad was Sterling Hayden? I admired his work greatly. And I agree that Strangelove was a masterpiece. I thought "From Dusk to Dawn" was a pretty scary laugher, too.

My vote goes to John Carpenter's masterpiece, Halloween (1978). What, no one else laughed during this film? C'mon, how many times can a dead guy get back up?

Sterling Hayden was in another Kubrick film about a bunch of guys planning a heist or something...It's been YEARS since I've seen it, but it was REALLY suspenseful...Was in B&W & mid-50s, I think...I thought he had a BEAUTIFUL voice, too...And was a VERY GOOD actor...

Your father did so many wonderful roles-my favorite-the police officer in "The Godfather". My scariest comedy-I was 8 years old and my Mom and Dad took me to the drivein to see "Abbott and Costello Meet Frakenstein". My bedroom was on the first floor and of course I dreamed Frankenstein was at my window every night for days-Idrove the whole family crazy screaming and crying. My older brother still kids me about that!!

Love that movie. Welcome to AK.... Fright Night was good for comedy/horror.... My all time favorite Vampire movie.

Thanks to all for admiring my dads acting roles....he made about ten fantastic films, some of which are mentioned. The other Kubrick movie he made was 'The Killing' made in 1956.......a great movie - Kubrick's first big film and he was only 27 years old, an amazing director !

My dad loathed most of the some 60 movies he made spanning 1940 to 1982, lot of B westerns in the 1950s. He just didn't think it was a real way to make a living.....he had a serious and intense nature about him and these were the movie roles that really fit him. I should mention., he had a great sense of humor as well

My personal "top 25 movies of all time" list is topped by Dr Strangelove and includes The Killing and The Asphalt Jungle.

And didn't your dad write a book called The Wanderer or something like that? He liked to sail I beleive.

I read a book once about your father's travels around the world on boats. He was an interesting guy and a good actor. Tough to imagine not enjoying anything he played in. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Strangelove is forever. When I was a kid, Abbott & Costello's "Hold That Ghost" would scare us and make us laugh at the same time.

That would be "The Killing". Very good movie.

I'm also a fan and The Killing is one of my favorites. You've heard this countless times but Mr. Hayden was a great actor. He was the best part of Zero Hour, an otherwise forgetful film except for being "re-made" into the great comedy "Airplane!"

Wow... thanks for sharing; I've always enjoyed your father's performances; in addition to "Strangelove" (which is one of my all time favorites), I also dig your dad's roles in "The Long Goodbye" (I'm a Raymond Chandelr Fan as well) and the classic "Johnny Guitar."

Dr. Strangelove is my favorite movie. From the actors, the sets to the director, it is a classic film. It should have won an academy award. In those times, the B-52 was considered top secret. Kubrick and the art department made the cockpit so real, the air force was investigating how did they made it so realistic.

I agree. In Rosemont, Illinois on June 27th, there having a 40th anniversary reunion of the Night Of The Living Dead cast including George Romero. It is on http://www.flashbackweekend.com/index.shtml I'm bringing my poster and I'm going to have the cast sign it and have my picture taken with them. Elvira is also going to be there in costume!

The video of my second marriage back in 1986. Still gives me nightmares but I have to laugh about it thinking back now less I go totally crazy...

Unusual film clip from Dr. Strangelove.
 

I came across this a couple of years ago. Very interesting to me because of the movie and the gulf beach development. We own a highrise beach condo in Gulf Shores, AL not far from Destin where this clip was filmed.

The first shot is of a B-52 in the top left flying over Destin Bay in 1964 I think.

The second shot is Destin Bay today from the same camera angle.

The third is a morphing shot from the first to the second.

This is a great example of why beach front home owners insurance is so high now!

Cool picture. Looks like there was more beach in the '64 pic. What a perfect alignment! How'd you do that? GPS? We've got places here in Florida like that, but it's only been 3 years. Really.

Recently watched Strangelove on LD, and just yesterday framed the cover & stuck it on the wall in my studio. Great movie.

Love the movie. You must be very proud of your father anden. He was a wonderful actor.

I believe there is a fundamental difference between film noire and "scary comedy".

i.e. Eating Raoul vs (anything with Jerry Lewis)

Dr. Strangelove is in my top 5 list of all-time favorite movies. Kubrick was brilliant, and the casting of Strangelove overall was absolutely top-notch. George C. Scott (not to mention Sterling Hayden) as a comic actor!

I think my favorite part of Hayden's work in Dr. Strangelove is in the beginning when Capt Mandrake goes to Rippers office let him know that that plan wing attack R must be a test or a foulup. Watching ripper go from genial to menacing is a chilling scene. Logan
