Was watching Bewitched this afternoon, and was noticing their Zenith console. The TV man came by to do some work on it, and then was put under a spell by Endora. Anyway, they gave a couple of good shots of the set.

Anyone else ever catch any TV shots on TV while watching older shows? Seems I recall someone mentioning before about a color set on the Beverly Hillbillies in which Granny thought there was water in it because it was on and was showing pictures of the ocean.

On Archie Bunker, the TV died when we was to be on the Cronkite News. They didn't have a front shot of the set, but Archie did insult the repairman. When they went to Kelsey's, there was an Emerson color set there. After Archie bribed the bar patrons with a round, Kelsey changed the channel just in time for Archie's interview to be preempted by CBS for a Nixon speech.

Later in the series, during the Beverly LaSalle story, Edith dropped her sweeper attachment under the TV and Beverly picked it up. It had the elements of a 60's era Zenith BW set.

I remember seeing a Bewitched episode where Sam and Darrin had a roundie in the first half of the episode and a rectangular in the second half.

As I recall, seems Darrin & Samantha had a new set almost every season.

I recently saw an episode of All in the Family in which Edith was trying to buy a new color TV for their anniversary. She went to archie to borrow the money, but wouldn't tell him what it was for. Of course, you know he didn't like the idea of not knowing what his money was being used for.

I remember a "Mr Ed" b&w episode titled "Ed's Color TV." I think it was a Magnavox set.
Also in the early 60's the NBC show "Hazel" switched to color and the episode had Hazel shopping for a color set (RCA of course) for her room.
Also the "Andy Griffith Show" where Aunt Bea wins a color tv in a contest.

Mr. Ed was sponsered by Studebaker! To put a finer point on it, the dealers actually sponsered it as the corporation put the touch on all of them to chip in!!!!!!! Next time you watch it look for Wilbur's station wagon.

I recently heard that they may be re-making this show, don't know who'll be in it...........the original Mr. Ed has long gone to the big glue factory in the sky.

Anthony and other Mr Ed fans...FOX Television has made a pilot of the "Mr Ed" show with Sherman Hemsley as the voice of Ed. Like all pilots, the show may or may not be picked up for the fall season.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who watches shows and tries to figure out what type of set is being shown. I also remember Sam & Durwood having a roundie, but didn't catch the mid-episode switch. I guess if they can switch a main character without explaining it, they can do the same for a TV set!

It's sort of interesting to think, and perhaps I've been seeing too many black helicopters :D, but did you ever notice that every sit-com is filmed from the Television's point of view in the room?

Is anyone else annoyed when the back of a console set is shown, yet it has no vent holes, crt neck or wires?

BTW, I was the person who mentioned the Beverly Hillbillies episode where everybody thought the new TV that Mr. Drysdale gave them for Christmas was a clothes washer. As I recall, this was an early B&W episode.

Anybody else watch "Crime Story" ? I remember one of the main characters had a blonde roundie that they usually showed being on. Kinda unusual, because it looked like the tv really was functioning, not the usual "cut 'n' paste" fake image job. Looked like it was probly a late '50s RCA-the show was set in 1963. -Sandy G.

Good call Sandy. I remember it was in some Mafia kingpin's living room. Of course there's always "American Dreams" which was trashed to death on this forum some time back. The show is into 1965 now and the father character/TV store owner is still selling new 50's era radios and tv's. Where's that store now?

I also remember a few "Honeymooners" episodes with vintage TV sets in the plot. In the Lost Episodes series "Kramden vs. Norton" they fight over a TV set won at a movie theater, circa 1955 I think.

That Hillbillies set looks a lot like the RCA roundie I have out back, the one I havn't identified yet.

It would make since that an ad man like Darrin would get a new tv every year, right? Probably had a tv company as a customer:) I had been trying to i.d. their set before but never had quite a good enough shot. Other sets I can think of: on Happy Days they have a portable set brought in to the diner for some special event on tv. For some reason my memory from watching this as a kid says the set was color (which would be wrong, of course) but it seems that I've seen it again in recent years & it was bw. The album cover of Huey Lewis & the News "Sports" has a CTC31 (I think). Of course, there was the I Love Lucy episode where she pulls the guts out of the tv.

And if you look closely (using a modern set) you can see the CRT is a obviously a Cardboard cutout! Apparently they thought a real CRT was too dangerous to have on the set. :)

There was anotehr _All in the Family_ ep where Edith had the TV set 's chassis and CRT sent out for repairs. All that there was left was the cabinet and 4 speakers on both sides of where the CRT would go. Archie gets home and attempts to turn the TV on with the remote. "Where's the guts to my TV set?" he asks Edith. "Out for repairs" she says. Archie decides it's time for a new TV set. Also it seems a ring or such jewerly Edith had was stolen, but under the household insurance. Archie wants to use the insurance payment towards the new TV. Eventually the ring is recovered and the insurance payment is denied, and Mike offers to make up the difference so Archie's check Archie paid for the TV doesn't bounce.

Must have been a reasonably high end TV with 4 speakers in the cabinet.

Another ep two black burglers are inside the place and they comment that the wallpaper is peeling and the place is a dump except for the fancy new color TV here....

i saw this episode a couple of months ago. I recall seeing all of those speakers, and was thinking the same thing... being a nicer model. Too bad we only see it from the rear.

Andy Griffith Show
 

Saw this set on the Andy Griffith Show tonight. Not sure what it is, but certainly looks 50's.

One thing to note... early on in this episode, Andy was turning on the television, and had sound immediately after powering it up. I've seen this with other old shows. Even in those days, viewers must have caught on to that.

Imagine how different a TV show would be if they made the audience view the warmup. Pretty exciting. Especially if its a good old transformerless job. Nice and slow. Just kidding everyone. That set also resembles a Motorola from the early 50s....

Looks like Sam and Darrin have moved up to a color set here. Well, more like Darrin moved INTO a color set! Got zapped in there by some witch that Endora knew from "centuries" ago.

Hard to tell, but I think this one is a Zenith as well as the previous B&W set I posted. Dick York played Darrin till 1969, so I would guess this to be a 68 or 69 model Zenith.

The beverly Hillbillies set looks like a ctc-15 with the 4 small controls under the screen.

Was just thumbin thru tv channels and came across a Predicta floor model on a Sci Fi show called Stargate Atlantis. Was kinda cool looking... they were in some kind of future console room... lots of computers and monitors... and apparently Predicta Pedestal was being used as one of the computer monitors. It certainly stood out in the crowd! I was not able to tell if it was a color or B&W version since I was watching it on a B&W set.

This thread suffers probably more than any other on the forum by its loss of images. :tears:

I've seen similar things done in other shows too, even modern ones. Often times when you see a TV in the room, the screen looks odd, it seems like it's either a piece of cardboard or it's been painted or coated with something. I remember seeing one TV show where the characters were in a kitchen and there was a small set there, and the screen looked like it had been painted gray! I think that they do this so that they don't get reflection of the lights and cameras off the shiny glass of a CRT. Otherwise it would be too easy to goof and have a reflection of a camera crew in the glass :)

Also there was a television in the 1928 movie Metropolis. It was used to spy on the workers on the plant floor. I always wandered if they used a movie film for the images on the TV since it was too high resolution for a mechanical TV?

I saw the same thing with the Predictas about a month ago, also in B&W, so I can't say if they were B&W or color either. Most of the time I watch TV I am either looking for old cars or TVs. I too have found alot of both in Bewitched, I've been watching the 2nd year of it in color on DVD on my Philco roundie the past few days.

Remember the 3 Stooges episode where the boys got a new TV & were going to put an antenna for it on the roof of their house? Of course, they make a melluva hess out of the whole deal, & I remember pulling tubes out of Shemp's mouth....-Sandy G.

Yes, I have those same DVD's. Origianlly, they were in B&W. That Zenith in Samantha's living room was a black & white set... not color... yet they colorized the screen. They did a good job when they colorized that season for DVD... but looks like they did the job just a little bit too good!

I laughed when she said she fixed the Zenith with a nail file. Hell... I wish it was that easy!!! It sure did leave the TV repairman with a confused look... considering he was still carrying the horiz. output tube in his hand while the set played perfectly!

The first year, the second year or both? When I got year one I saw color and B&W, and I got the B&W, but when I went to get year two I saw only color ones. But it looks like they have a B&W TV to me in year two as well (I think there are two different ones).

On one of the American Chopper episodes about the beginnings of the Teutul family, some of the old footage of Paul Sr. at his mother's house has what looks like some sort of console model color roundie with legs. It's really hard to tell what brand or model it is. Maybe Paul Sr. will know? :)

I just Googled the second season DVD to be sure I understood the meaning of your post. How discouraging: the second season of Bewitched was not filmed in color. The DVD release is all artificially colorized material.

The second season is available in the original B&W, I got the colorized version because it can still be viewed in B&W or color if desired.

Did anyone else think the colorizing on the second season was slightly less well done compared to the first?

Yes, the old b&w seasons (1 & 2) have recently been colorized. In those seasons, Sam has a B&W Zenith, but since the show was colorized, they also made her Zenith color... which would be a mistake. In the episode where her father comes to visit for the first time, they show her B&W Zenith apart all over the floor. When it's on again, it's playing color.

Eric, I haven't watched all of them yet, but, I thought the color was okay. Or at least, not bad considering it started out as B&W. I'm sure it must be quite a job to give those shows color. With "old color" episodes, it's just a matter of retouching color... but with black and white, it's like starting from scratch. Can't be an easy job. In any case, I've enjoyed them.

Hope this sort of qualifies as TV on TV. Recently surfed by the film "La Bamba" on TV and hit it just as the Valenzuela family was watching Ritchie, all of them huddled around their Admiral 10" bakelite consolette just like the one I have. It was brief and the set didn't appear again after that.

Not to mention "The Secret Life of Machines - The Television". It has an interview with the curator of the Vintage Wireless Musuem. During the interview, prewar and postwar english sets are shown. It's what first interested me in early and vintage television. I'd love to own that Marconi 707. :)
