The band on this show is awesome. And the live stereo audio quality is excellent.

There are two great rock singers in the current final 12 - David Cook and Carly Smithson.

I've setup my TV with the vintage JBLs and I crank it up when these guys perform. Excellent live music.

The band is great, good call.

American Idol is a pretty good show. It's especially interesting when singers get crafty with arrangements. A guy on the show (i think it was David Cook?) sang a rock version of Lionel Richie's "Hello" which was surprisingly very good.

Cool, you never know how it'll turn out for Idol's. Remember Bo Bice? I was able to spend two days with this cat and band in late Sept 07. He wanted to use my farm truck in his new video. I never knew just how much work they put into a music vid till then lol. This ain't the best song on his CD IMO [ he has some great songs on it ], but this song and vid is pure karma :yes:

My wife was watching it the other day, and as I was passing through the living room (I absolutely refuse to watch that crap) she said "Wait- listen to this. This is the best person on this season. They're really good!". Well, I lasted about 10 seconds, and couldn't take anymore. EEGADS! It was horrible! I guess that's what they call "popular" or "pop" music, but it kind of ranks right up there with disco. I would quit listening to music if that's all there was to listen to. :smoke:
And she makes me listen to some wannabe every season, and they're all CRAPPY! I just can't imagine any real rock singer even contemplating going on that show. I really think it's geared toward pre-teen adolescent girls. I'll probably get slapped for that comment.

thats my take. Its not my favorite type of music. But it is good for family time, talking about the performers, what we liked or didn't like about the music, etc. There aren't a lot of shows that my wife and I can enjoy with our 13 year old daughter but AI is one.

My better half and I also watch the show.....I agree that it can be hit or miss with talent, but every now and again, you'll have a contender who puts on a great performance.

Love it or loath it, I'm sure there were alot of folks who didn't care for American Bandstand either back in the day but that's what made Dick Clark a household name. AI is a TV show, not just a singing competition.

Just an observation, but does Paula always repeat Randy's impressions on a performance or has she ever had an original opinion?:D

I admit it, I confess: I watch AI.

I have to mute Paula. She goes on and on without an original thought. Most of the time she acts like she is under the influence of some strange but happy substance.

Randy's constant "What's happening DOG!" is annoying. What does he think is happening? They just sang a song! They want to hear their review of the performance!

I like Simon's barbed wit.

I watch AI. My wife got me started on it a few years back, and we've watched it ever since. I don't enjoy it as much after the rotten singers are gone, as I think they're one of the funniest things on TV.

I like Simon, I tend to hear things in the same way, so as he reviews I often find myself nodding. Paula is a little too sweet in her reviews to be believable, and Randy, well, he's Randy.

I'm liking tonight's episode as it's Beatles songs only, so as long as nobody absolutely murders them, the songs will hold their own.

I like that Amanda Overmeyer. She's like a cross between Janis Joplin and Joan Jett.

I'm enjoying AI tonight too. Amanda was good, but Brook's cover of "Let It Be" was exceptional.

Brooke White is great. Genuine and talented.

Semi-hijack here...did anyone catch the dude on "Don't Forget the Lyrics" last night? Don't know his name...but could he wail! Blew me out with Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz".

David Archuleda was the only one that really nailed the performance tonight. His cover of The Long and Winding Road was great. This kid has a beautiful tone to his voice.

All the others really struggled with these Beatles songs. Time to move on to some new music.

I agree completely, Idol sounds great, and video is excellent as well, in HD. My wife and I started watching 2 seasons ago and we're hopelessly hooked. I think Fox network is way ahead of the pack in exploiting HDTV's potential, with PBS running a distant second. Go figure...

Look forward to it all year long. Never miss one episode. Tape it when I'm not home.

I think it's just fabulous watching these kids, or not-so-kids, chasing their dreams. Who wouldn't want to be a rock god? Who doesn't sing in the shower?

I was heartbroken when Melinda Doolittle was eliminated, and I can't wait for her first album.

David Archuleta is the one to watch this hear, along with Carly Smithson!:thmbsp:

One more totally entertaining show last night.

David Cook's completely original version of Billy Jean was amazing.

There were a few missteps, but this final 10 has a lot of talent.

Ron's pissed that Amanda didn't make it.

I thought he was having a hard time with the notes. Several warbles and missed notes. I remember thinking that it's too bad they're playing in the wrong key for the kid. He's not bad.

I can't stand the show but my wife watches it, at least she's now asking me to play some Beatles tunes for her.

Now if they'd do Rush... just kidding - I'd have to shoot them then.

David Cook was good last night - but he sang Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean. I'm not sure if the judges knew that? either way, it was good.

I'm still pulling for Brooke White to win. Last night wasn't her best; she had a little mishap at the very beginning, but she's keeping up.

And is it me, or do the judges seem extra hard on Carly Smithson?

AI - the ONLY show my wife & I watch regularly & together. Good family entertainment.

The judges have started to become harder & harder on Carly. She was the original 'annointed one'. Unfortunately she's already released a CD that tanked completely. Her label sank $2mil plus into it & it sold about 400 copies. The problem they have is Randy was one of the producers on that CD. It seems just a little incestuous at this point. Once that became well known I think the judges realize the jig is up. Carly can't win, otherwise it'll look like the fix is in.

David Cook is awesome but my wife adores (& I'm convinced would run away with) Michael Johns - that's ok, I still have my Katharine McPhee wallpaper on my PC - at work :thmbsp:

I saw the 2nd half "live" last night and was not impressed. Even Brooke let me down, she performed like she thought it would be her last time. The end of show highlights indicates that the 1st half was better, so me and Tivo will get together. I remember that my first comment to my wife after turning on the TV was "gee, look at Paula's tits!"

Just caught this thread. I don't want to read all the other posts until I've had my say.

It's a great show. I really enjoy it until the wannabes are eliminated. Then it gets to be so-so. Sometimes my wife wants me to watch it and we enjoy it together, but mostly I think the 'true talent' is pretty mediocre. Not all, but some of them just wouldn't make it. Can't remember one actual name other than Kelly Klarkson at the moment.

And I think Paula is a babe.

Seemed to me that Neil Diamond just wasn't a good match for these guys. There wasn't one performance that I really enjoyed.

Too bad Carly was eliminated last week. She could have been great on "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show."

Paula was more stoned than usual last night. She is losing alot of brain cells from some substance. Simon saved her by jumping in and changing the conversation.

Paula is definitely the top subject on all the blogs today. Her screw-up is going to be very, very damaging. It raises the question of why did she have notes in front of her about a performance that had not yet taken place?

There are only two explanations...either she took notes at a rehearsal and intended to use them to critique instead of the actual live performance, or the judges are simply given their lines in advance. Neither one is good.

I have been an avid fan of the show for years. I think it's terrific to watch the contests grow, and change, and improve over the weeks. The ones with talent will start to bloom, and the rest will drop by the wayside. Except this year.

Carly not making it closer to the end is beyond belief. Something is going on here that has nothing to do with singing ability. I know, it's partly a pure popularity contest, and you have to have constituency groups to survive, but something is very wrong.

I agree with you, Carly is really missed in the final 5. But if you look at her last several performances, she would sing the same way almost every time and she would screech on those high-notes, making it uncomfortable.

With that voice, she had the potential to hit it out of park in any performance, but I don't think she ever had the right song or arrangement to really show her stuff.

But, the judges were way too harsh on Carly compared to others (Brooke, Jason) and they helped send her packing.

I missed last nites performance while watching a baseball game. My wife dropped by the ManShun to tell me about Paula's pre-performance critique. That is so insane! Makes Paula the one to party with for sure!

David Archuleta (sp) seems to have the best pipes, but reminds me of a male version of Norah Jones. Maybe even better. Neither are the type that gets me hyped-up. Win or lose, David will be a star.

But the show is just fine regardless. I love the highs and lows, the Panel of judges, the band, the format, it's all good. A better version of the Ted Mack Amateur Hour, if you can remember. Doing it LIVE is a real challenge to every player! Especially the backup band and the contestant. That band has got some real pros, let me tell you. I'm always amazed and enjoy the show just to hear what that band will do. Maybe they'll be the next Idol?!

I think the teenage girls are voting and voting and voting for Jason - that's the only reason he is still there. This explains why Carly and Brooke are gone.
