For what movies or shows are you impatiently awaiting a HiDef release?
 

What do you want to see in HD? I'm hoping that Toshiba giving up HD-DVD means an accelerated release schedule of HD (as in Blu Ray) discs and in particular I am really hoping to see these soon (they took way too long to hit DVD):

Twin Peaks (and David Lynch's movies too, because they always have great cinematography).

Sword Of Doom (Great samurai movie!)

The Marx Bros deserve to get one of those really fancy and expensive remaster jobs on their films because the DVD releases were atrocious. I'd be quite happy if they left them in mono as long as they clean up the film even just a bit! (I'd actually prefer if they don't try to make a surround or even stereo mix of the audio).

And my last wish is for the

T. Rex - Born To Boogie DVD to get pushed over to BR asap because it RULES and I really, really, really want it with DTS HD or some other lossless audio format.

My wife is anxiously awaiting the Bourne Identity series...

What he said. I'm hoping one format means that companies will be less gun-shy about printing stuff. They've been mastering and remastering in HD for years, but there are still less than 1000 titles available on both formats combined after two years of releases.

I'm hoping less confusion in the market means there'll be several thousand on Blu Ray by December.

I'm in as soon as the Blu Ray players hit a reasonable price point, probably $300 or so.
I'd like to see some classic titles in 1080, not just the big new stuff with lots of explosions.

Can you imagine the new mistakes you could see if Plan 9 was in Hi Def!

The annoying thing is that even the BR players that approach that price suck a lot compared to Toshi's, and are pretty much guaranteed to for quite a while.

I'll probably wait for the Oppo player, by then there should be some stuff worth seeing on BR. I, too, am mostly interested in seeing classic movies. B&W should look a fair bit better in VC1 encoding.

I'm impatiently waiting for the damn industry to agree on a format--any format--and stick with it.
vhs, super vhs, dvd, laserdisc, hd-dvd, blue ray. sacd, dvd-a, s-video, component video, hdmi, dolby pro logic, 5.1/ 7.1, lcd, plasma, crt, jesus christ just buy your favorite music and movies and enjoy them! Only the pencilnecks of the world could possibly keep up with all this.

If the sony style deal is still going on you can.

Sony Style was offering $100 off the 40gb ps3 which makes it 299.

Oh yeah and remember only ps3 is capable of upgrades so as of august when BR 2.0 comes out all standalones are junk. Plus you can help us all out by using it to fold.

Most players can get firmware upgrades, it's just unlikely that many other players will be upgraded to profile 2.0. However, some may be.

If you check the PS3 forums, there are increasing numbers of posts about failures of the BR drive. Personally, I don't feel comfortable with them because I am reminded of the beginning of the RROD rumours for the 360. Given a few more months I guess we'll see if it builds up to anything. Hopefully it doesn't, but a bunch of my friends had the same problems with their PS2s so I guess I don't have much trust in game hardware anymore.

The PS3 doesn't support any of the lossless audio codecs, either, which is one of the primary reasons to upgrade in my opinion. Maybe they'll get that going when they upgrade to profile 2.0, though.

Anyway, this fall it should be clear whether or not the rumours amount to anything, there should be more options on the market and we'll know exactly what features the PS3 supports :D.

Now if only there were more movies worth seeing on the format!

Lost Highway is finally being released on DVD next month, but I feel like I'm wasting my money buying it in 480p :no:

I am sticking to VHS and DVD until everything does down and I can actually buy on the cheap, and take advantage of the sound, the picture (I just use Composite) and discs are CHEAPER. I still buy used VHS's, and I am satisfied with them for the moment.

Home Theater is enjoyable, but it just does not excite me like plain old vintage audio does.

Call me crazy, but I find HD exciting because I am a cinematography nut. I love great-looking shots in a movie but between the crappy McDonald's standard of projection in most cinemas these days and the various flaws* on all the previous formats I've never really been able to enjoy the film the way I know I ought to be able to, so getting a chance to enjoy them at closer to master-level quality is very exciting to me.

As I said, we have those crummy MegaCinemas with 16 year old projectionists more worried about hitting on co-workers than running a movie correctly, so even first run in the cinema can't compare to an HD disc. Well, sorry, we have one cinema that works hard, but last time I went there my car was stolen :tears:

*even if you find a good VHS or Beta tape or Laser Disc it's rare to find them in the original aspect ratio, and DVD suffers from ancient, inefficient, excessively lossy compression (including the audio), in addition to a basic lack of capacity.

Absolutely agree.
The sad part, as mentioned, is that Kodak and Fuji 35mm film stocks are better than ever before and camera lenses are reaching a pinnacle of perfection, and meanwhile the projection standards keep going to hell.

With all the compression even in HD broadcasts (which depend mightily on the routing through god knows how much cable system hardware) and the artifacts visible in both this and in many regular DVDs, bring on BluRay discs.

To so many who say 'an old film won't benefit from HiDef': have you ever seen a good 35mm print of a classic B/W film? It blows away just about everything in terms of resolution. There is plenty to be gained with BluRay.
