One summer when I was 10 or so, I saw a movie but cannot recall the title of it. It was very strange. It was set in a major city perhaps New York and was filmed in noir style B&W with lots of shadows. A young woman is locked in the basement apartment of the building's super. I believe he rapes her. At one point she kicks him in the eye and he loses it, wearing a patch for the rest of the film. There is a dream sequence that really disturbed me. She is in a large museum running through the halls as if being chased. She keeps running into people with no face, only a smoothed over area. (This seems to be a common theme in some 50's films.) These people appear to be laughing at her and she runs on until finally she finds her way into a huge gallery. On the far wall is a large painting of a forest with a stag in the middle. As she runs to it the eye in the stag falls out onto the floor and she awakes screaming, locked up in the basement apartment. After the dream though she begins to develop a relationship with the guy who was raping her!!!

If I'd seen the above later in life I would have sworn it was the opiates talking but I was only 10 so I am pretty certain of the film content. The girl reminded me of Sandy Dennis but the IMDB shows nothing unless this was an episode of the Naked City TV series.

Does this strike a chord with anyone? I've asked before on other forums, maybe this one too, but never gotten an affirmative.

Yeah, the dream sequence with the stag sounds very familiar, but...not as if I'd seen it, just the description.

I know I've seen it, but like you, the name (or any further details) escape me. I can remember that it scared the poop out of me!

I need to join a film forum. This is the last one on my list of disturbing films I saw when I was young and never knew the title of.

This is a MINIMAL information puzzle, too!!

Then I was a kid(say-5-7 years old or so) My family and I would go to drive-ins a LOT in the spring and summer. My mother and father both liked them, and they were cheap. As a kid, I liked them too--there was lots of little rides for kids and such--then too, sometimes the door was left open to the projection room,and I could see "some things".

As for the movies we saw-I recall Walking tall, Magnum force, Deliverance, severl John wayne movies, Several Disney movies, and a couple of lost classics like Brother of the wind.

BUT--There was ONE movie, the title of which has remained a mystery to me for well over 30 years now. It was something that we did NOT stay for. I only recall ONE scene, from the VERY beginning:

There was a guy and a cat in a dingy looknig room(probably apartment) and some guy appeared to be poisoning the cat. THAT was enough for my dad, and we all left at that time. It was probably 1973,74 or maybe 1975. NO later.

ANY ideas on that one??

The film title is "$", the dollar sign.

It opens with a man drawing off a small amount of liquid from a champagne bottle with an eye dropper. He then takes the liquid and applies it to cat food he has just opened. He then puts it down for the cat. The cat then goes into spasms. The liquid was LSD. Your timeline is perfect for that film to have hit the drive-ins.

Looking at the write-up for the movie--Doesn't look too bad. Well-known stars, sounds interesting too.

I'll probably have to check it out now. But when I was 4-6 years old...It probably would have not been too interesting. Then again..I liked car chases and action then..just like now.

Heh! That scene was intense! No way anyone would forget it. I haven't seen that film in ~30 years or more but I do recall that cat writhing around. Now, about that stag with the eye falling out!

Woe! I caught a piece of this movie one morning on cable. It intrigued me as it took place in the Bronx during the borough's better days and I used to live there.

I had to leave and forgot to check the title. This was a good 7 years ago. Thanks guys.
