Well, hello again chaps and chapettes. I have a terrible work schedule going right now but I had to take a mo to submit my lattest, and last if I don't clean house somehow, acqusition. This Stromberg Carlson 24 RP is the biggest set I have ever seen (haven't been to Steve's museum yet) and I have to say I am very impressed with the construction. The knobs are all cast metal with the markings cast in, and the AM/FM (top) and tv (bottom) vernier tuners are THREADED and have to be screwed on and locked in place with lock nuts! I had trouble finding the off/on switch till I put the back on, it is in the rear on the right edge as viewed from the front. BIG power switch. It is complete:), has been stripped:( , and the crt is supposed to be bad:mad: although I have not checked it yet. It was cheap cause of the crt. Maybe, after I catch up with work:rolleyes: and get several other tv projects done;) I will recap this monster and see what the crt can do. Might be a job for Hawkeye, we will see.

Is that a 24" Metal/Glass tube??

It kinda looks like a Dumont from the screen and knob layout, it looks a lot like the Royal Sovereign?

OK guys here are the rear views, and a shot of the record player. The crt is steel/glass. A small stuck-on label is missing from the crt, and I can't get to the neck to look for labels, nothing on the plug base. Was hoping to see the Dumont name on it as I THINK they were the only folks to make these monster crts. :dunno:
I took the plastic cover off the crt to look. Upper chassis is the AM/FM tuner. Some of the tubes are missing, like the second 5U4.

I'm supposed to go look at one of these monsters, wasn't sure what I was getting into until your pictures. Not sure if I have a place to shoehorn it in, but then that never stopped me from getting any of the other big ones. ;)

Chuck, the dims are 37-1/2 wide, 46 high, and 28 deep including the bumpy-out part.:cool: Thank God for casters! If I retire from building pipe organs:grnbounce, I think I could do a good business making dollys. I have had plenty of practice!

The crt is mounted on a cool slide-out mount that rides in rails aattached to the top. I moved this one with the crt in but the chasssis removed. It was heavy even that way.

A local collector had/has a Packard Bell 24" that I think used a metal tube.

It's much more impressive looking than a 24" rectangular tube :D

According to the Sams it is, but I have yet to find a marking.

It is probably 'cause the round crt actually has more square inches of area. And they of course don't help by using a three inch bezel!

Well I went over today and bought the Stromberg. It's missing the back, the case has a few scratches that I should be able hide with some Howards and polish. The base of the crt is broken so I have to put a new one on.

NO IDEA where this one is going to fit, still on the truck.

Can't post pictures until I fix my camera.

Theres a seller on Ebay right now who has a 19AP4 up for auction. What does this have to do with this topic you might ask? He mentions in that auction that he also has a 24 inch round crt if anyones interested. It might be the crt that you might need if the one in yours is bad. His email is [email protected] I figured i would pass it along just in case you might want to inquire further. Cant hurt to find out just in case since these crt's are extremely rare and especially in usable condition.
Before you posted your pic's, it was hard for me to guage how big these suckers were until i saw yours setting beside the Admiral. I bet it would be really neat to watch old tv shows on that huge round screen especially for those of us that are accustomed to round screens that are 19 inches or smaller. With your SC being a combo to boot...thats just icing on the cake! Nice set!

I just finished recapping my set, be prepared when you tackle yours. They must have installed some of the caps before the chassis was built or had some tiny assemblers :)

Also there are 3 caps "hidden" behind the vertical output transformer that I found tracing a short on one of the B+ lines.

Most of the wirewound resistors either were bad or went bad during the test power up stage.

Also found that the schematic in Riders doesn't match the circuit 100%, I found a few parts in the chassis that weren't on the schematic and of course one was a WW resistor that was open and the value was burned off.


I have an unstable picture now, no vertical or horizontal lock that may be caused by a shorted video output tube or something more.

Not an easy set to work on.

Boy you sure work fast, Chuck! So far I have done nothing more than make a dolly for mine so I can move it around, and try unsuccessfully to buy the 24AP4 a guy mentioned in an ebay auction. Probably it will wait a good while for me to get some simpler sets in my oversized "to do" list done first.

I should be working on customers' sets, but I just had to see a picture on this beast. I'm hoping that a new video tube fixes the problem, I really am getting tired lugging that chassis up and down the stairs to work on it.

Finally tracked down all the shorted B+ lines and have a good stable picture. Still have a problem with reception on the low band tuner, yes this beast has seperate tuners for low band and high band. When you select the source; TV Low, TV High, AM, or FM the appropriate tuner B+ line is switched on or off. Also still have a dead FM tuner, save that for another rainy day.

Beautiful set! And Sweet Maria, look at the size of that cabinet :eek: The Radio Craftsmen made some great equipment, very top notch. I can't begin to imagine changing a CRT that size, the round ones are just so intimidating :p:

Hi- I've been a member of this group for a while...mostly a silent observer.

I picked up a Stromberg Carlson model 24 RP "Stancliffe" a few years ago and it needs to leave my garage. Identical to the model posted earlier in this thread - this one has a turntable in the lower left (next to the speaker). Cabinet is in great shape. Has the back. The picture tube does have a brightner on it and the bakelite CRT base is loose and probably should be replaced. Deserves a good home.

I've got the original paperwork (including the bill of sale) - originally sold in St. Paul, MN for $753.00 in 1951.
