Anyone know anything about this set?

A fellow with an antiques shop in Italy wrote me wanting to know something about this set.

Obviously it's styled after the Predicta (or vice versa?)

I'm not sure but it looks like it may be a modern reproduction...the CRT corners look squarer than the early 1960's ones, plus there are buttons for "video" which likely would not have been on a 60's set.

Yeah, wasn't there an outfit 10-15 yrs ago making "repro" Predictas ? Maybe this is one of them...Seems like they were EXTREMELY expensive, a 27" model going for like $2K...

I have not seen much in the world including that so I am guessing for fun and to test myself.

It looks like a color CRT and the control panel had me wondering but I could not see the video button, so, I think it's modern.

For my taste it is overkill to the max. I imagine many would love it but I would much rather have that Predicta JPdylon is offering for an amazingly low price.

Telstar still has a website up, though it hasn't been updated (what one would call) recently. They're the ones with new color Predictas with contours virtually identical to the original but scaled up: 25" screens on theirs vs. 21" on the original Philcos. The one pictured here is absolutely not a Telstar.

Yes, but there was a second source. I think Telstar had the Predicta name, and the other guys had Philco? :confused: . Anyway, there were some that were really square, a second brand.

I've seen them though, and this isn't either kind.

A quick search on google, brought up this page. It's from 1961..Wow!

And, it's probably a posterized Color Conversion, already (saves me a lot of work)!

Teleavia was the proto-Predicta back in 1957 (some sources say '56?)
and now we see similar sets were on the market as late as '61.

I've seen the Kuba Komet in person. Unless you have about 15' of free wallspace, you ain't a gonna fit one in around anywhere, those things are huge!

My fingers have also personally touched the Lucite 1939 Worlds Fair TRK-12 :)

Ah, but the Lucite cabinet isn't from 1939! A forklift truck took care of the original some years back and a repro was made.
