Just want to share it out just in case any southern California buyers want it. I'm not sure if this TV worth anything or not. I went to my local Goodwill thrift store today and found a very nice 1960s 25" Zenith Space Command 400 console TV. It looks to be in excellent, prestine condition, and does not look like it has been used a lot. I do not know the working condition. It is located at Riverside, CA, off at Magnolia Ave, next to Ralphs. It is $50. The staff I spoke with said that if this TV does not sell by next week, it will go into the landfill, so I hope you can save this beauty. Sorry, I don't have a photo.

Do you know the address of the place exactly? It's a little far, but could be worth it. Did you notice if it has the remote with it or not?
Normally I'd stray from another big console, but I do like those Zenith SC tvs.

How long did they make the Space Commanders? Were there a lot of different models?

If memory serves I've got one (color set) in the garage that I haven't paid any attention to for months, that we've been trying to give away that was given to us! But my guess would be a later model, I'll take a look when I get home.

It may not be anything anybody is interested in and I have no idea how old it is? I'll take a look later and post my findings. I'd hate to curb it if someone would want it, it works.

Got it home and unloaded.
Pulled the back and tested the CRT and it's excellent!

Also checked the date on one of the small tubes, 48-60 so my guess of 60-62 was pretty close.

I went ahead and plugged it in, first with the remote active, nothing happened, even jingling keys in front of the receiver had no effect so I switched the remote off and then the set came on.

It has vertical problems, just a single line across the tube, slight hum in the sound but it tunes stations albeit with a very dirty tuner.

One other little problem I haven't looked into is the tuner knob spins without turning the tuner, something's stripped, also the up-down switch won't change channels either, unless the remote has to be on for that to work?
There is the knob in back that does work the tuner so I know it at least turns and the lighted numbers in the center of the dial change with it so I'm guessing just the knob itself is bad.

The cabinet has a few minor scuffs and nicks, mostly on the top but overall a very nice example of a limed oak type finish.

My house is at the breaking point for new acquistions, especially large ones so something coming in meant something had to go out, in this case a badly beaten Phiilco 48-2500 cabinet that has been sitting in the garage for several years! It'll hit the dumpster after I strip out all the useable pieces.

Looks like the 23" tube, if it's like my 23" b/w Zenith, it's the only b/w tube I've ever seen with the bonded saftey glass. Also if it's like the Zenith I have it has electrostatic tweeters, another rarity on a television.

The "tuning knob" is for fine tuning only. On that set you would change stations with the power tuning buttons or remote. The knob in the back is to turn the tuner to set the channel skip tabs on the rear of the tuner. Nice find those were great sets.

Further notes:
It does appear to be a 23" and have a bonded face tube, I was going to mention that but forgot.

It says "High Fidelity" on the front and may have tweeters, I did note the long skinny speakers on each side when I had the back off.

Nice find, and this proves something to be not always correct, which we have worried about... Several of us, myself included, believe that most thrift stores throw TVs out without even bothering to put them for sale. Glad that this may NOT always be the case!

I have a Philco 23" b/w set that also has a bonded safety glass CRT. The CRT is a 23AP4. It also appears to be a remote set,and I can't locate the on/off-volume control on it! :dunno:
